yes you have to pull the heads to do lifters. You said you have a lifter tap how long did you let it run after the pump swap? If the pump failed did u change the filter etc? since the pump failed the lifters will bleed down. Give some more info

So if im goin to do lifters might as well do a cam swao though some say it didnt change much with a new cam. I had it running for about twenty minutes and warmed it up then shut it off, it was fine at first no tapping. Then when i restarted it did the tapping noise in the left head. no filter change put heavier oil in it though. seems to be getting loader and worst.

ya sounds bad, how long did it run with no oil pressure? and how many miles on it, they may determine if you were to get a different engine, cam it and install. As it goes depends on the cam and supporting mods, tune? headers? intake? fuel quality? gears? Torque converter?. i just dont wanna steer u in the wrong direction with your noise.

Well see i was driving home after xmas(bout 50 miles) and it started tapping then when I got close to home the oil press. guage dropped down. it has bout 113,xxx roughly. All I have is intake and exhaust and it looks like some did motor work before so im a lil worried. Might as well do cam and lifters and rockers but i didnt want to go and remove the heads, looks like im going to have to. lol

Are you sure the pump dies and not the oil pressure switch? Ive seen a few threads where oil press switches have went out but not an oil pump. But if you are going to remove the heads and replace the lifters and are thinking of doing a cam also, you wold be wise to replace the push rods with 6.1 push rods and the OEM int/exh valve springs with (16) 6.1 exh springs. You will also need to replace the cam and crank bolt. Dont let that scare you because all of that is right at or slightly less than $100

If you are pulling the pump and replacing it then replace it with a 6.1 pump and replace the timing chain while you are there.

I still have one of the valve spring tools for sale you can use to pull the valve springs if you want. Obviously you will need new head gaskets and head bolts (another $100)

I already replaced the oil pump, but a lifter is ticking. No codes, but definitly goin to replace cam, lifters, rockers, and timing chain. I have a limited budget so im tryin to figure some details out before I move forward. Will the stock 6.1 pushrods hold up to the new parts?

You can get a 6.1 cam for very cheap. Ive seen them as low as $50. 6.1 valve springs, 6.1 push rods, the crank and cam bolt are all under $100 shipped. Im not sure ont he price of the lifters but can find out for you if you want. I would think around $75.

All the 6.1 components will fit in the 5.7 heads? What will it change besides the strength? I got a quote on a set of lifters and it was about $490 bucks. Dont know the difference between MDS and non MDS so im not sure what to order. Yeah if you can get prices and where to order from let me know.
