Talking ABS sensor question

HI folks.

I'm curious to know something on an SLT 06 1500 Ram that only has rear ABS. It appears that the only rear sensor is on the diff.

My question is how does the ABS know when to kick in if one of the back wheels stops turning while the other is still spinning if there is only 1 sensor?

Also, are there any sensors on the front? I didn't see any when I looked. I'm just curious to know how it works.

On my truck I have an ABS sensor on the front drivers side wheel hub.

Hey weed. Is there not one on the passenger side? Seems as though the ABS system is "incomplete" even for 2 wheel system.

All I can say is I don't have one on the passenger side. Only the driver side

I'm surprised that only weed answered me on this thread. I thought we had some engineers in this community. Maybe this topic isn't interesting enough.

Thanks weed for your input.

No probs or worries. Others may stop by and answer. Some days are slow and come are over populated.

Thanks weed. I certainly hope we get more input as I'm very curious to know how the rear only ABS works properly. It just seems that sometimes it doesn't do things right and could be due to the fact that the design is bad.

If others see this thread and have input, please post! The thread isn't dead. I'll keep checking it.

On Gen II trucks there is a ring that goes on the Ring gear in the back differential. The sensor on top of the differential reads the speed of that ring and makes decisions based on that reading. I'm almost 100% positive it didn't change between the years.

Hi Bama, Yes you are correct. The ring is in the diff. My problem in trying to understand is how can the computer judge if you are in a lockup based on a single point of input? it should have sensors on all 4 wheels to see that the front is spinning while back is locked.

Or if one back wheel locks up, the diff and driveshaft will still be revolving, so the ABS sensor still records movement.
