Default Question about Towing and Jet chip / K&N

I drive an 02 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 4.7l Quad Cab. I am not at the maximum load but my truck seems to struggle. Well I am not a real big avid tower but now I am. I am just trying to get a little better edge on towing.

I tow a 4800 Travel Trailer. I can go around 55 and maintain it most of the time.

What do you guys think doing a Jet Chip Stage 1 mod along with K&N do you think I would notice any slight difference? Maybe a better mid power as in maintain 60 easier? I am not asking it to be a miracle just getting an opinion. I am not trying to get to race day first, just trying to feel a little more confident while towing, a little more power in mid range would make me feel that way.

Also I am very confused about superchips and jet chips. Is this the same thing? Do you just buy a Jet Chip Stage 1 and install it into the ECM and wala?

I dont want to spend money a programmer, its not that serious.. Looking to spend around 500 total and get better performance. From what I have read and heard, I should be able to notice a difference. Just noticing a difference in accelarting and possible power for towing, is all I am looking for.

Anyone on the forums have the Jet Chip and K&N?

I am trying to get to where I can drive flat terrain in OD. Right now I don't seem to have enough horsepower to get to the gear most of the time so I drive with OD off. I am not going to kill my tranny and let it shift back and forth, if it wont stay in OD then I just turn it off. I am trying to get to where I can maintain a speed of about 60 and possible increase gas mileage, if I could get to OD. I know while towing and when I reach OD I get 12 MPG. Other than that I am at 8. I assume with more power I may be able to reach it and hold it?

i also have an o2 4.7 quad cab short bed, and I have a jet chip stage1 and k&n along with a power wire, full exhaust. the only reason why i have a jet chip is it came on the truck when i bought it. i can say that with stock 3.55 gears i can break the rear end loose no problem in first and if i try i can do it going into second. highway driving is no problem cursing 70-80 and no problem getting there. never drove the truck with it off tho so i cant account for the difference from stock. if your really interested i would be willing to sell you my jet stage1 as im looking custom tuning

First off, before i get into the main issue, with you guys having 02's, what is your engine maintenance like? Are you guys fully maintained with new plugs and good wires? Good distri cap and button? All vacuum lines and hoses good? Oil changed on time? Emission components in good shape?

4.7 did get better and more performance over time but back in 02 is wasnt the greatest to begin with.

Towing with gears like 3.55s isnt going to be nice. Towing with 410s or 456s would be a lot better.

Dont waste your money or a true K&N setup. Go make your own CAI and, at most, put a K&N filter on it.

Jet chips Im not found of but Superchips I like a lot better.

I would agree with weedahoe on the home made CAI, i made the one i had on my 4runner and foxbody with great results lots of ppl on here do it aswell.

my maintenance, yea im a maintenance and time change ****, at work i maintain 20-30 year old F-16s(they break alot but thankfully not as much as f-15s haha) and they only made it to be that old because of the maintenance. so i apply that logic to everything i own

Excellent to hear. I would be curious to see what kind of compression you are getting on each cylinder. Any blow by? I guess what Im trying to look for are any signs of a worn and tired engine.

Gears would help towing also as they would give you a mechanical advantage.

My truck is tuned up, I keep up with everything due to the fear of sieze, as I hear a lot about. I am interested in your jet chip how much, send me a pm.

I change oil every 2500 miles and did plugs 6k miles ago. Its the best truck I've owned but I am trying to improve gas by 1 or 2 mpg, its my dd as well. That's the reason I don't want to regear.
