Default Intermittent Stalling During first 5-10 minutes

Hello all,

I own a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 series 4x4 with the 4.7L engine. Was wondering if anyone else has experienced a stalling issue that is present only during the first 5 -10 minutes after a cold start while driving as the truck is warming up. The stalling occurs as I'm about to stop for a red light, I notice the RPM drops to below 400 RPM just prior to stalling. It only stalls once, and restarts everytime with no further issues till the next day. As I'm driving just prior to stalling, I notice that there is somewhat of a hesitation as I press down on the gas pedal. The truck will not stall if I let it warm up a good 15 minutes after a cold start. My guess is that I've somehow got an incorrect fuel/air mixture while the truck is warming up. My gas mileage for inner city driving is about 9-10 mpg which I find to be quite low even for stop n'go traffic.

Last year I replaced the TPS sensor to fix another issue that I had where the RPM was jumping around alot. I also cleaned the throttle body last year as well. My best guess as to what could be causing this is either the EGR valve or one of the O2 sensors.

I hope to get this fixed before the hot weather arrives, as the problem then may not be apparent.

Any help provided is much appreciated.

Thanks,
- Tony

I have the 4.7L engine 89 miles on it and I, used injector cleaner and no more stalling issues for me.

Welcome to the site. Are you getting any check engine lights?

Nope. No Check Engine light.

I also noticed that after a cold start, the truck idles fine. It's only after I start driving that it may stall if the truck has not fully warmed up yet.

I have not had mine stall yet, but it does have a very unstable idle. I have not tried to remedy this yet, but start with running a good quality injector cleaner in the gas. From what i've read on this forum, cleaning the TB and IAC motor / valve might be the next step for you. As for your gas mileage, it's not that far off what mine is (currently 11 mpg).

The TB would be the first place I would have looked at, however I cleaned the TB and IAC late in 2009 (about a year and a half ago). I also got the dealer to clean my fuel injectors about the same time. So I'm assuming the TB and fuel injectors should be fine.

I'm leaning towards the EGR valve as the symptoms all point to an EGR valve that is stuck open while the engine is still cold. It will be a hassle to replace thou as it's located at the back of the engine.

Front O2 sensors could also be causing an issue

I agree. I was leaning more towards the EGR valve, but malfunctioning O2 sensor(s) could also be the culprit here. Before investing any money on parts, I'll head out to the auto parts store to see if any codes come up. Hopefully I get a code that points me in the right direction.

Mine acted the same way, was the front O2 sensors... Also found a bundle on the firewall of grounds that were randomly throwing codes, but that was another issue.

So +1 on O2.
