Default Good Trade?

I'm trying to figure out if I'm getting a good deal or not on a trade. Dealer had 04' 2500 CTD QC Long Bed, 4x4, 6 sp manual with 87K. I want to trade my 2003 2500 Hemi, QC Short Bed, 4x4 5 sp manual with 140K. With my trade the dealer wanted $14,000. I think it's a decent deal, but I would like to get some opinions on it.

hmm i think 14k for essentially the same truck with a CTD sounds kinda high. It has lower miles (and obviously a lot longer life) but thats alot, a new car for many brands. I would try and talk em down some more

Retail differences are around $9000 here. If both truck are the same model type. I would think a slightly lower difference would better with a trade. Now if that truck is in excellent condition and yours is not that would increase the difference. I would think 10-12 if they are in similar condition.

the diesel is a $7,500 option. Now we know the gasser is getting closer to the end of its life, but 14k?

I would say 12000 and walk away they always have at least a thousand to work with say 12000 and hope for thirteen at the most be firm.

I am with you. $14K plus your trucks IMO is way too much. Unless your 03 is beat to death, is a bare bones model and this other truck is a tricked out Laramie, or something I would not make that deal. They would have to drop down to a minimum of your truck + 10K for me to even consider it and even then it sounds like way too much. IMO people way over pay for used HD trucks with diesel engines.

Day and night difference between a gasser with 140k miles on it and a CTD with 90k miles on it.
You also can't look at straight sticker or retail difference between the gas engine and the diesel. Yeah, on paper the diesel is just a $7500 option over the Hemi BUT, they were routinely discounting Hemi trucks $8000-$10,000 dollars in '04, while you were lucky to get a dealer to knock off $2000 on a diesel. So that $7500 was in reality more like $15-$17,000. I know, I shopped for a new diesel in '04 when I bought my Hemi. With over $10k in discounts and rebates on gassers that were not available on 2500 diesels, coupled with the $9000 sticker difference between the two, I couldn't justify close to $20k difference for a truck that was gonna get 8k miles a year and tow nothing heavier than a 2500# bass boat.
$14k is prolly about "fair" assuming the condition of both are about equal, I'd say if you can haggle them down close to $12,500 it's about the best you are gonna do...
