Default Rear Diff oil change

i am about to change the rear diff oil i am about 1500 miles early but i am sure it will not hurt. i hope it will help with the rearend groaning and am going to inspect the diff while i am at it. my question is do i need to buy the friction modifier from dodge or will a parts store modifier be the same? also in the haynes manual it calls for 75w 140 synthetic any tips on which brand is the best? thanks mike

Mike, I am not sure if this link below will work but I had some of the same questions the other day. Hopefully it will answer some of your questions.

I got mine from Advance Auto Parts. I forget the brand (Trans-X maybe?). That was three years and a whopping 24K miles ago.

If you have a LSD then you need the friction modifier. If you do not have a LSD then you dont need it. I have used the modifier from Advance Auto Parts and AutoZone also though and I never had any issues.

Basically if you've got a 1500 2wd you should have a LSD. You'll need 4oz of the additive ( any brand is fine) Then you need 72oz of 75w 140 synthetic (or till the fluid is level with the fill hole). Royal Purple is a great brand but somewhat pricey. If you're changing your gear oil at the regular intervals then you should be fine going with just about any brand as long as it is the correct weight.

Remember to put the additive in first, then the oil ( that way the additive mixes thruought the oil) You will also need some RTV Sealant or a gasket.

Good Luck!

How do you know if you have an LSD? I am also going to be changing my front and rear diff oil and wasnt sure if I needed to add the additive.

You can email Dodge for a build sheet, or look in glove box and look for a sticker that tell you u have LSD, I just did all my fluids with RP and so far so good, I got the front and transfer case oil from advanced auto, I went on line and got coupons, ending up getting the FD oil for 13$ and the TC oil for 8$, they do not sell the RD oil

sticker inside glove box should tell you what gear you have, and if you have anti slip or not.

It will be called "anti-spin" on the sticker.
