Default Advice on Retreads

So recently at work a few guys have been talking about Retreads and 1 guy actually has them. He loves them to death, and swears he will never buy a regular tire again. He uses them for daily driving to and from work as well as off road. I know nothing about them, but what they have told me. They sure would save me a decent amount of $$. The website is TreadWright.com and i saw a post dating back to 2008 but ive heard alot has changed in 3 years on how retreads are made. So if someone could shed some light on experiences that would be awesome. THanks

yea supposedly the retreads are safe and there have been a few good threads on them, but the one guy that was pushing them so hard on one of the forums ended up getting a new set of regular tires cause the retreads started separating or something internally

I don't have any personal experience with them, but from retreadtires.org:
Used tires are another way to save, but the quality varies widely as there are no way to gauge the true quality of a used tire besides a rough visual inspection. Perhaps some tire shops will do more testing but there are no official ratings for used tires. Not so with retreads. Retread tires go through a complete ISO 9002 manufacturing process and gets DOT approval to perform as good as new.
Hope it helps.

Yeah that does help. Thanks. Just wish i could confirm a real person who has used them. Cause from other forums i dont know if they are just employees or what. I know they get DOT approved... guess i just want to hear it from someone on here lol

Been in two vehicles in my life that had a major tire failure, one was a sidewall blow-out, the other a separation (doing 75+ mph on the interstate), in BOTH cases the owner was running re-treads.

Not for me, thanks...

I dont think I have ever met anyone who uses retreads. I remember the same thread Matt does, this guy asked an opinion, and received everyones opinion accordingly. Then he became pissed at the naysayers and went and bought his tires, the thread was forgotten about then. I saw on a different forum a couple months ago when I was looking for a set of tires to put on my truck this same guy talking about his new tires and working something out with Tread Wright.

I just prefer my tires to be virgin tread. I wouldnt trust or marry a *****, and the same for retread tires.

I bought a set of the TW Warden's in stock 265 size. I only have about 4,000 miles so far and I am very happy with them. They were great in the snow. I didn't get stuck once this year. The only issue I have is they flat spot sitting overnight when temps are down around 20 or below. 1/2 mile and they are smooth again. I will be towing with them this summer for camping so we'll see how they hold up in heat.

As to re-treads failing, I would think it would be more related to abuse and/or low air pressures. Time will tell for me. All I know is I had a set of 4 tires bought, shipped and mounted/balanced for the same money as 2 new tires.

I saw a retread once.... It passed me on the interstate after it separated from it's owner. Something about not wanting to exit so quickly.....

If you can't afford good rubber, you can't afford the truck.

My two cents worth
