bad rear tire...where to put the spare?
Hey Guys,
I have a rear tire that "blew" the inside of the sidewalls. It doesn't look like an issue on the outside, but upon breaking down the tire, it is full of rubber crumbs and can see many spots where the plys are showing through.
The spare is 245/70/17 and the other tires are 285/70/17...is it ok to be driving around tire shopping with the spare on the rear, or is it likely to burn up the rear end?? Or should I swap it with a front tire and have the same size tires on the rear??

What you need to do is buy a new tire for the blown out one (or a set). Then have the tire store put the best used tire you have on the "spare" wheel. That way next time all your tires will be same size and if you need to use a spare, you won't have to worry where it goes. Good luck. I'd go to discount tire also.

Ok, I know this isn't the best idea...and will prolly look ridonkulous, but what if I were to put two 245 up front and two 285 in back (as long as I promise you guys I won't put it in 4wd) for a few weeks until I can afford the Nittos I want...
would that be like an aweful thing to do...the tire guy said being 4x4 they have the be the same, but I don't see how it would affect anything if 4wd is not engaged...I understand the tire height changes the gear ratio a bit, but some of you guys mentioned in my thread last year that I could put 4.56 in back and leave front 3.55 until finances become available, as long as I don't engage the 4wd...so I don't see why mismatched tires between front and back would be any different, as long as they match on the same axle...am I being retarded, or will the 245s be ok up front for a while?

Any more input from anyone on staggering between the front and rear as long as 4wd is NOT engaged??
