Default 2007 Dodge RAM 1500 5.7 Hemi

Hello all,

Got few questions about my 2007 Dodge Ram 1500. This is my second Dodge truck and looking to buy another for my wife here soon. Can't get any better than Dodge. First question, I am starting to have some ticking noise coming from the drivers side which I am sure are the lifters becoming loose. I already use a slightly higher grade of oil than the manufacture recommends and doesnt help. My question is does the 5.7 Hemi have adjustable or hydralic lifters? Also, has anyone else had problems with the Oil Pressure kicking a Engine Code every few months. I read that the 5W20 is causing this oil pressure problem but I use an heavier oil than recommended. The only other optionI can think of is change out the Oil pressure Switch?

The heavier oil is your problem, 5w/20 is CRUCIAL to proper MDS operation, no other viscosity should be used, it's probably causing your lifter issue as well. Dodge will void your engine warranty if a different viscosity is found in the crankcase...

To answer your question, the lifters are hydraulic. I don't think very many are solid anymore. You definitely should go back to Dodge's recommended viscosity.

Default Thanks

Thanks for all the information. I had my wife have the oil changed back to the recommended oil. I think I am going to to AMSOIL 5W/20 for the next oil change. We found out it was the oil pressure switch and there is a Dodge recall issued out for it. Thanks for the answer on the lifters. Hoping it is just an exhaust leak or something simple like the oil. It hurts to be a mechanic and deployed trying to figure out what is going on with my truck. Someone else is touching it...LOL. Thanks again for all teh information.

Amsoil is a no no too. it actually gets thicker with age and will end up a 50wt which is very bad for your engine. If you want synthetic, go with Royal Purple.

The ticking could be a broken exhaust manifold stud or just the normal Hemi tick.

To me more specific we use a roller hyd lifter. If you have some ticking it could be the lifters but check the exh manifold bolts first for any broken or loose.

if you are thinking of taking it apart then I would take it a step further and add a small cam in it while you are there.

Although this is VERY true (the gaining of viscosity is what makes the product last so long), it's not shown in lab tests to get measurably thicker until it reaches around 10k miles. If you want to run Amsoil, fine. Just get the proper viscosity for your MDS Hemi (5w-20) and do 6k oil changes, I wouldn't chance too much over that.

Of course, if I was gonna do 6k changes, I wouldn't spend the big bucks on Amsoil, I'd use about any 100% full synthetic. I prefer Royal Purple because it seems to quiet the Hemi tick the most and appears to be cleaner when I do my 5k changes, but I have used Mobil 1 (which makes the Hemi tick loudest for some reason), Castrol Edge and Valvoline SynPower...

Thanks for the advice all. I'll have to look into the Royal Purple. Plan on having this truck for a long time. I can't wait to get home and start working on a leveing kit, step ups and play with the motor a bit.
