Am I getting screwed by Dodge????????
Ok everyone I own a 04 ram 1500 2wd lone star addition. Which I believe to have the 4.7l v8 magnum engine. I took it to the Dodge dealer to have the engine replaced. " Rebuillt long block from dodge" When I got my truck bk the engine looked different ie the way it set in the engine compartment and a few other things.. I called them and told them that the engine didnt look like the one I had before and they told me that they put in what I had. The paperwork that they gave me said that they put in a 4.7L mpi engine... So my question is did I get screwed. Is an 04 4.7L SOHC Magnum engine the same as the 4.7L mpi? They told me that they would look into this and call me bk on monday which was 3 days ago.. Please any help.
Dodge has made or currently makes 3 versions of the 4.7 PowerTech engine. All three are based off the same block.
The original 4.7 (287 CI) engine produced 235 HP and 295 ft/lbs of torque and was available in the Ram from 2002 until 2007.
A High Output version of this engine, also called the "Magnum" version, had enhancements like larger fuel injectors, enhanced intake, forged crankshaft, etc. and produced 265 HP and 335 ft/lbs of torque. This engine was available in the Ram from 2002-2007.
In 2008 the 4.7 was enhanced to two spark plugs per cylinder, a new slant intake design, compression was boosted to 9.8 : 1 and it produces 310 HP and 334 ft/lbs of torque.
The easiest way to distinguish an HO from a standard 4.7 is by looking for the stereo knock sensors that are only present on the HO (Magnum) version. These sensors are hard to see under the manifold, but the dual pigtail connectors can be seen easily. If your old engine had these pigtails and this one doesn't, it means you had the enhanced engine and now have a standard 4.7...

and before anyone says it, I didn't mention the "High Output" lettering on the cowl because it's not present on Rams.
For excellent reading on all the enhancements of the HO over the standard 4.7:

Thanks hammer good to know, but my problem is that its already done I dont have my old motor anymore Dodge has it. My original window sticker paperwork says 4.7L v8 SOHC Magnum (R) engine. All dodge done was replace the long block... Also i dont have my original air cleaner that came w it because i put on a cold air intake. The new paperwork from Dodge says they put in a 4.7 MPI long block... So are all the long blocks the same? Would all my accessories from the Magnum engine fit on this MPI Engine. Or would they have had to put on different accessories when they got this MPI long block?
Couple things here:
Lone Star Rams cam with a 5.7 HEMI, not the little 4.7. So whoever told you it was a Lone Star because of the badgeing, is mistaken.
As far as I know, all accessories for the engine itself (CAI, exhaust, etc) should work.

The 5.7 Hemi option could have been manually deleted off of the build after the Lone Star package was added in the build computer software. Not common or really likely, but it IS possible.
OP: If there was an HO engine from the factory it would have CLEARLY stated it both on the window sticker and the build sheet. Also I've seen a LOT of Ram trucks first hand and have NEVER to date seen a 4.7 HO engine in one. Although it WAS available, it must have been a REAL special option. You'll usually see the HO in Daks and Grand Cherokees (where it was standard in the upscale Overland version as I have).
An OHC 4.7 is MPI and vice versa. One talks about cam position, the other about fuel injected. All 4.7s have over-head cams and are multi-point injection.
You in all likelihood have the same engine specifications you started with, although I guess it could be a different year engine...

MPI just means Multi-Port Injection. They all have that.
As far as looks, the 4.7 is a 4.7 and they are all a SOHC design. Some may have metal or plastic valve covers, but the design of the engine the same for all versions except for the 08-up which is a different animal. Kinda like the 03-05 Hemi have aluminum valve covers and the 06-up have back plastic ones like mine.
Can you post up a picture of your engine?

My family happens to own 2 identical rams of the 06 and 08 model years. Each is a 4.7L. My pops has the 06 with the 4.7L magnum engine.. not HO. Mine is the 2008 which has the new version with 16 plugs the upped compression ratio and such.
I had the hood popped on both the other day because I was putting in a new air filter and was checking my dads to see if he needed one. And his motor does appear to sit much farther down in the engine bay than mine.
From what I could see it had to mainly do with size of the cylinder head/valve cover assembly and also the intake manifold and resonator hat on the 06 seemed much more low profile than mine. Also the non-electronic throttle body was smaller in size in looks.
This is just a mere observation I made one day. I highly doubt it's possible that the newest version of the 4.7L would just drop right in but I could definitely distinguish many differences between the two trucks.
