Warn M8000 Winch Used Once - $400

This was on craigslist and I got the guy down to $350 with this work on my Dodge on the inside of the bumper?

Is it worth the price ?

Good winch, technically a little underpower for a full size, QC 4x4, but you can always get creative with things like a ****** block to help the winch out considerably. I had a Warn M9000 (now discontinued) on the front of my truck for five years and now I use it on my Grand Cherokee. It utilizes the same motor, solenoids, etc. All the same as the M8000 except for different gear ratio. I've put it to work a lot, mostly clearing trees up on my piece of farmland and it's never had an issue.

Warns don't depreciate much at all if they are in good shape, so $350 in perfect condition is a steal! My father bought a used Warn 8274 when I was in junior high (early '80s) and he still uses it, it's on it's 4th truck since he bought it.

Warn makes a "hidden" winch mount for '02-'05 Ram 1500s, it's pricey, but then again, it's a Warn...

 

I was thinking for that price I could just slap it on and then always upgrade later.


I was wondering if they made a mountain bracket for that unit M8000 behind the bumper..

I dunno, I'd still take a Warn M8000 over a chinese made 9000-10,000 lb. winch. If you pass it up, then keep your eye out for a Warn XD9000i or a Ramsey, about anything out there would be a step down from that M8000 even if the rated capacity might be higher. The M8000 has a HUGE following with the Jeep Wrangler crowd, so for $350, I think you'd be able to sell it down the road for about what you gave for it.

If for occasional use, the chinese winches (Smittybuilt, Rugged Ridge, etc.) would be a good investment, but I don't think they'll stand up to regular use or the test of time like a Warn would. Superwinch & Mile Marker are ok, but like so many other American owned companies, they've gone to designing them here but having them completely built in China anymore. One thing you gotta watch is the amp draw and the comparatively low duty cycle rates of the cheaper imports. These chinese winches heat up fast and need constant "rest" periods.

If you can swing it, the new Warn VR series of winches are an entry level winch line marketed to be able to compete with the chinese ones that are cutting into Warn's market. List on the VR10000 is $579 although they are fairly new on the market and they are in such high demand, everyone seems to be selling the line at full retail.

Keep in mind that ideally, a winches rated capacity should be about 33% more than the weight of your truck + occupants + cargo, but using a ****** block effectively doubles the capacity of a winch.

 

That M on the M8000 means military and means replacement parts are hard to find. I passed up an M12 because of this.

The "M" in the M-series of Warn winches has to do with the duty cycle and the "M" means it's a medium duty winch. This is opposed to the "XD" series which stands for "extended duty", as they have features such as a higher heat resistant control pack that keep the winch running cooler, longer. The newer "XP" or "Endurance" series of winches actually have a combination of cooling fans and heat sinks for near 100% duty cycle.

Don't let the "M" (medium duty) fool you, the duty cycle is still about double what the better chinese winches are.

Warn hasn't had a military contract since the late '70s when Ramsey beat them out, now Mile Marker has it to my understanding. Warn does market a line of "Military & Severe Duty" winches, which are all 24v btw, but to my knowledge they are used in heavy duty engineering applications. They have contracts with the Corps of Engineers, but I don't believe they sell to the actual military. The winches commonly seen on Hum-Vs are Mile Marker Hydraulic Winches.

Aside from the M8274 which came out in the late '70s and continues to be produced, the M8000 probably has the most availability as far as solenoid packs and replacement parts goes.


BTW, my M9000 is on my Jeep because I now have 'Weeds old XD9000i on my truck. He sold it to Pyro along with his trans4mer grill guard and I worked out a deal with Pyro to install the grill guard and lights + about $250 in .223 ammo for the winch. So far, I've used it three times and it's performed flawlessly.

My old M9000 has literally had the hell beat out of it clearing a bunch of huge live oaks and cottonwood trees around my pond at the farm and it still asks for more...

 

When I was looking at that M12 and couldnt really find any diagrams or info on it I called Warn and thats what they told me. Not say the CSR is always right because we know they are not.

 

I almost positive the old M12 is now the M1200, same winch, different name. Unless I'm wrong and there was a different M12 than the one I know.

Warn used to have the M12, M15 & M16 and discontinued the M16 in favor of the 16.5Ti, which added 500 lbs. more capacity and a thermometric coupler that gives a constant winch temperature readout. The M12 & M15 simply had their name changed to M1200 & M1500.

But regardless, the M8000 the OP is talking about has a strong following for replacement parts. I've even seen Ace Hardware stores carry 3rd party solenoid packs for it at about 1/4 the price of a Warn.
