Question 2002 Ram 1500 Rear seal replacement

Hey all, I'm changing out the main rear seal in my 4.7L V8 Ram. In the Haynes manual it says to lift the engine with hoist to remove oil pan. Is there a "safe" way of lifting the engine with a floor jack?

Thanks,
Shudbe

Welcome to the site. I would look in the manual and see how it says to lift the engine. I would think you have to wrap a chain around it and use a cherry picker. You may also want to click on the link below in my signature and download the service manual for your truck to also help

just had my oil pan off my 03 and didn't have to lift the engine. I did have to beat the oil pan off the gasket/windage tray with a pry bar between the gasket and pan.

Default Need some help diagnosing

I’m seeing a lot of what I think is “oil” around the trans pan. Maybe the rear seal isn’t leaking.?. I drained the engine oil yesterday and now I’m seeing even more drips on the ground right under trans pan. Maybe I’m getting this confused with trans fluid.?. Sure looks like oil though!

That leak isn't all that bad. First I would spray some degreaser and rinse with a pressure sprayer. Then drive for a day and see where it's leaking as it could be up higher.
To lift your engine, you could use a piece of wood and jack up the crankpulley. That will safely lift the engine granted you have the motor mounts loose.

OK, I'm diving further into this oil leak which I thought was a rear main leak. I removed the crossmember beneath the oil pan then removed the brace between the oil pan and trans. I now have a clear view of the flex plate. I thought I would have seen oil in this area as an indication of a rear main leak. Any thoughts?

I'm now proceeding with removing the oil pan...easier said than done. Smacking it with a rubber mallet or deadblow is worthless. Now I'm taking razor blades and tapping/wedging them in between the oil pan and gasket. Very tedious!
