Swaping OPEN diff with LSD diff on ram ?
Hi all ,my friend bought an 06 rear axle with factory LSD on it , if he wants to replace the open diff on his 04 rumble bee with that one CAN he just open the two diffs and swap the inner stuff ?? Both are 3.92
clutch pack retaining clips breaking and falling into the diff can be a potential issue but most guys (myself included) usually never notice until we pull the diff cover to inspect the diff/gears and change the oil and find them at the bottom.
Close. The clips hold the clutch pack together during assembly on the the diff. Once all put together they are no longer needed. However, when the break, only the W shaped ends that stick out break off which is what you find at the bottom of the differential in pieces. The rest are still in the differential itself.
It miht be easier and possibly less expensive just to swap out the whole rearend, if they are the same. Then you wouldn't have to have the diff setup-----just pull those c-clips or retainers or whatever they actually are while its apart.

If it is a 1500, it is a 9 1/4 corporate. You cannot easily make it an open diff. The Trac-Loc uses clutches pushing against two of the pinion gears (spider gears). This provides the preload and adjustment on the pinion gears as well as providing a limited slip. If you remove them, you would have to shim the pinion gears back to replace the clutches that were removed.
The clips are what keep the clutches from rotating. They are absolutely necessary and are not just for assembly. If the plates rotate then the frictions would never have anything to rub against and provide a limited slip. The plates are held by the clips to the carrier and the frictions are splined to the pinion gears. That's why you hear a moaning noise from the rear when turning if a clip is broken. These are all serviceable parts and relatively cheap...done a million.
If your in Jax, I have several open carriers laying around...
