Default Truck is now using more oil?

I have a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7L with just over 100,000 miles. Before my last oil change it only took just over 5.75 qts of oil. Yesterday when I change my oil it took nearly all of 6.75 qts of oil. Good thing I had some extra. On top of this when I took off the oil filter instead of being full of oil it was nearly empty. Any known reason of why this might be happening or where the extra oil is going? Last I could tell my oil pan didn't become a bottomless pit. As far as I can tell the engine is mechanically sound. No knocks or ticks and no smoke coming from the exhaust...Any ideas or suggestions?

Also, the oil has been changed between every 3000-4000 miles.
Using Castrol 10W-30 High Mileage Oil and Fram High Mileage Oil Filter.

It should always take the same amount of oil to fill it up unless you are not draining all of the oil. If it hasn't been changed, you are due for a PCV valve.

keep in mind also that 100k is a lot for a gas engine and there certainly is so internal wear

do not use Fram Oil filters, only MOPAR 090 works best you will have cleaner engine and cleaner oil when you drain it.
on some Fram Oil filters the filter itself inside its gone, so the oil cruises inside like there is no filter.

There is nothing wrong with Fram filters. I used them for years.

I turn wrenches for a living and in my close to 30 years of being a professional mechanic I've seen more Fram filters fail than all the other brands combined. I'm in agreement with the statement "stay away from Fram filters!".

And ive been wrenching for a good 15 years and have been using Frams and never any issues. I used them on all my custom builds and even on my 87 Olds 442 that had a Cad 500 block and a remote dual oil filter setup. Ive got one on my Hemi now and ive never had one "fail". I have had the oil stay on the block sometimes when removing them but that happens to all brands.

Oil filters are personal preference

Glad you've had good luck with them. My experience with Fram is not limited only to automotive applications. I've seen too many Fram/Allied Signal failures to trust them. And you are correct, parts are one's personal preference.

Thumbs up using more oil

I have a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7L Hemi. My truck calls for 5W-20 not 10W-30. Try using Synthetic 5W-20 all year round.

And you're sure that last time you changed the filter and double checked the oil level after filling and it was full? I'm not trying to insult your intelligence, just double checking the simple things. It obviously doesn't make any sense for it to take more oil to fill this time than it did last time. It's like saying a jug of milk took 4 quarts last week and 5 quarts this week. Either something was measured wrong or something got spilled.
