Default Is my steering rack to blame?

I took my truck in the other day to see why the front end was clunking so bad. It would do it at low speeds when going over bumps and even sitting still if you jerked the steering wheel back and forth.

The report back from the shop was that my tie rods, ball joints, sway bar bushings, everything was tight and in good shape. He feels the noise is coming from the steering rack (makes sense) but didn't feel the need to replace it as he couldn't make it act up on the lift, only when driving it.

He said it's safe to drive, when it gets way bad to bring it in. Well.....to me it is way bad! It sounds like crap.

I know that the stering racks are a problem on our trucks, but I thought it was mostly from leaking oil. How is it clunkng? Isn't it just a hyd. cylinder?

Anyway.....I'm taking it to another shop, can't stand a nice truck making bad noises. Any thoughts here?

That looks nice but I don't it will fit my truck as it's not an 2500/3500 or a Magacab. I have an 05 1500 4x4.

Just like with doctors....I'm taking it to another shop for a second opinion.

Its the same problem on all the Dodges. Go back to that site, they make for your truck as well.

That noise sure sounds like a upper ball joint is bad to me.

If the clunking sound is only audible from inside the truck then most likely it is the top end of your steering shaft. Mines been doing it for abit now. The wheel pull is a dead give away. It sounds almost like it's popping or a clunking. Verify this by checking where the shaft goes into the u-joints under the dash. Look for play when moving the steering wheel and also feel the shaft for the clunking.
This is just something to check for before you take it in, so you can point the mechanic in the right direction if that's it.
Borgeson makes a great replacement unit. Alittle pricey but you get what you pay for.

The part# for the ram 1500 is " 952 ". It does all 1500 models from 03-08.
GL and hope you get this fixed up. Nothing worse than a good truck that makes bad noises.
