Default New guy with 06

Hey guys new here. Just bought a 06 Reg cab 4x4 slt. I used to have a 99 quad cab4x4 so I am happy to have a dodge again. My question is that I notice that the OD kicks on in town and the truck feels way underpowered when it does. I have been turning off the OD in town, will this affect my milage? It's a 4.7 with 75000 miles. Also what can I do to prevent problems down the road. Truck had 1 owner and looks and drives like it is brand new.

Eisen,

Turning the OD off will typically reduce your gas mileage but by how much really is determined by how you drive. If you want to PM me the VIN I can check for any recalls or OD related TSB's that may apply to your vehicle. I can also send you a build sheet if you would like one. Welcome back....

OD always kicks on once you get to a certain speed and start cruising. However, with an 06, sure you dont mean the MDS where cylinder deactivation happens? Thats a PITA and can be disabled with the right tuner. If you think it is the OD, then just push the Tow/Haul button and see if that fixes it or not. If so, great. If not, its the MDS.

I do cut the OD off and it runs fine. I was just curious because it tends to come on around 40 mph. I drive conservatively trying not to push it over 2500 rpm. Money is tight so I try take it easy on gas. I will pm you Chris. Thx

He has a 4.7, so the MDS is not the case here. I had a dakota with a 4.7 and it annoyed me as well. Eventually I got used to it.

sounds normal to me. you are at a cruising speed and the engine isnt heavy load that warrants a higher gear needed for pulling or acceleration

- use this forum
- keep up the maintenance. if you have no way to know if/when something was done that should have been by now, assume it wasn't and get it done asap.

FWIW, I've never disabled my overdrive. I use the tow setting when towing but, other than that, I do nothing but turn the key and drive. Turning off the OD is going to increase your RPM's and use more gas - period.
