couple remote start questions
I just had a viper 5501 (remote start only, no alarm) installed in my 2005 dodge 3500 and a couple things just don't seem right.
1. The truck has the gray key so i needed a bypass module, which was an additional 75 bucks. The weird thing is that they had to leave one of my keys under the dash plugged into this module. I'm not comfortable with having a key in my vehicle at all times.
2. Using the viper remote now, not the factory one.....and when the doors are unlocked with the remote...the factory alarms still goes off when the door is physically opened. Called them and they said they would disable the factory alarm. That doesn't sound right either, the viper remote should work the same as the factory keyfob I thought.
3. The hazards come on whenever its remote started....it should just be the parking lights I thought.
Any thoughts would be appreciated before I bring the truck back in there. thanks in advance...

#1 bypassed any value your start disabler from dodge provided. Now, with a couple tools, someone can steal your truck. A bypass allows for the truck to be started without the key BS. Very unprofessional.
#2 BS. They need the proper module for the security system in the truck. I have an 06 3500 and I use the compustar with a bypass module with no issues.
#3 Did the installer check the install before handing the keys back to you? He's likely tapped into the wrong wires.
I'd be going back and talking to the guy's boss... Sounds very amature.

They normally do hide a key because it is chipped with RFID and the truck looks for it in order to start whether by remote or ignition. Grey keys got it, black keys dont
Pulling the fuse to the OEM alarm module isnt hard. Neither is pulling the power harness to it if that fuse feeds more than just the OEM alarm
Agreed on wrong wire was tapped and should have been TESTED BEFORE tapping it and again AFTER tapping it to ensure it was the correct wire and working properly
Ive got a Clifford in mine and is the exact same as the Viper you have

That doesn't mean its right. He was charged $70 for a bypass module, that's what it's for. The security system is disabled due to this. A do-it-yourselfer, fine, you take the risk. Your paying a professional to do it, I'd be mighty pissed.
i recently put a remote starter in my truck, the bypass module is needed. You do have to leave a rfid key in it, but it does not have to be a cut key. or if you already have a cut key in the module u can remove it and grind the key so should it be found it will not turn the ignition cylinder. dont know about the alarm function as my truck did not have one. As for the flashing parking lights look in the book for your remote start you should be able to change that from flashing to steady on.
Ur installer messed up. I had that happen on my last pickup same thing. The module was wrong so it didn't disable the factory alarm. everytime I did unlocks it would sound. also with the module if it is not right you might have starting issue like i had. At time it would only start via remote and not by key, or if I cycled the key forward without starting and then went back the security system would activate and the truck wouldn't start for 15 minutes. That was all discovered after the 90 garentee was up. Also about 2-3 years later the wireing fried the computer... PITA

thanks for all the info guys. I have no confidence in that shop anymore. I went back and raised hell.
He said he hooked it into the hazard lights so I would know its running. I told him its a two way system and called him an idiot. He then hooked it up to the parking lights.
The bypass module is screwed shut with the key inside it. If a thief finds it and gets that key out, more power to him. But i took the suggestion of someone here and had him take the key out and grind it down so it couldn't be used to start the truck. And i verified that the truck doesn't start with a copy key i made that doesn't have the chip in the key.
The factory alarm...he did something and got that all working fine.
Everything is working good now. Hopefully it stays that way. Thanks again for all the help.

I'd still be concerned about the key being in the console. Basically, it nullifies any benefit the factory alarm gives the owner. Fine, they cannot 'use it' to start the truck, but a hammer and screwdriver turn the tumbler, and with the key there to over-ride the security system, say bye bye truck.
If your insurance company who holds theft insurance on the truck ever found out you over-rode the factory security system, they likely would not cover your truck in the event it was stolen. If it was recovered, and investigation by them found they key in there, likely any damage to the truck during the commissioning of the crime would likely not be covered.
I've tried starting my truck using a non-programmed RFID key to verify they bypassed my truck correctly, and it shut down seconds after starting, which is what it should do.

as long as the key is in the bypass module it still cannot be started without a key in the actual ignition. the bypass module only reads the rfid in the module when the remote start portion of the unit is activated. So should a thief use a screwdriver in the ignition the truck would not stay running, unless they knew about the rfid key in the bypass module, found it and put it near the ignition. Unfortunetly if you are going to have autostart and your vehicle uses the rfid system you have to have that chip and bypass. I found this out the hard way. I assumed my vehicle was not a chipped key and after doing the install figured out it was when it would not stay running lol.
