Default The dreaded 04/05 Hemi Stall. Help please.

First of all hi, long time listener first time caller.

So I've had my 2004 Ram SLT Hemi 5.7L since 2004. For the first 50,000 miles there were about 4-5 times I can recall experiencing the "slow stall", where the engine basically shuts down as though a light switch was flipped to turn it off. All of the sudden though it's happened 4 times in the last 4 months. You can look here to see some other examples of the issue.

Here are the symptoms (which I think are pretty well known to members of this forum by now)

1. No check engine light.
2. No codes.
3. Typically starts right back up.
4. When it happens it (to the best of my recollection anyway) happens right after I fill up the tank from empty. (I think this is a key symptom).
5. It doesn't always happen when I fill up the tank (as evidenced by the infrequent occurrence).
6. When it happens it is when I hit the brakes hard at a slow speed to taking a sharp turn at a slow speed.

It is very unsafe because I lose all brakes and steering. The worst instance was a few days ago as I was merging onto the interstate during morning rush hour. This was also the first time that the truck didn't immediately start back up, which concerns me even more. I would normally just throw it into N and start it up but ended up having to go into park and turning it over 4-5 times before it finally started.

I've gone to the dealer and had them flash the PCM and brought the TSP to their attention. That was a couple months ago and today is the first time it stalled again.

Has this issue ever been definitively resolved? I think the fact that it happens right after filling up the gas tank has to be a huge clue but I can't figure out what it's telling me.

I've got to figure this out because it's very unsafe and I'm losing faith in this truck now. Ideas? Soultions?
Thanks!

Mine was caused by the egr valve.
Replaced it in June and no longer have the problem.
I had the same problems as you are having.

Mine does this too. So the jerking forward and cutting off can be either a dirty throttle body, egr valve, or torque converter?

This issue has come up a number of times. From what i remember, most guys notice the problem when taking turns after filling up with gas.
I'm most certain one member replaced the fuel pump and it solved the problem. reason was because a failing check valve in the pump.

I'm not 100% sure, but that is the first thing that comes to mind and has stuck in my head for some reason or another.

I pulled and cleaned the throttle body a couple months back so it's not that. I'm tempted to replace the EGR valve just because I think I can do it myself pretty easily and it's not that expensive.

Replacing the torque converter is a big job isn't it? That's beyond my normal home garaging.

Thanks for the replies! Keep em coming!

Yep. Taking turns right after filling up. I'm afraid theres no way for me to actually test the fuel pump for this is there since it's highly intermittent?

Is replacing the fuel pump on this thing a "taking it to the mechanic" level issue or can it be done at home? I'm a pretty capable mechanic but if the pump is in the tank theres no way for me to do it myself.

Thanks again!

The pump can easily be replaced. You just drop the fuel tank )when it is empty so it is lighter) and disconnect the wiring and hoses. The tap the locking ring CCW and pull the pump up.

You have checked the trans fluid level right? Also replaced the EGR and cleaned the TB? We had one member over on DT that found bad or corroded traces on the PCB on his PDC.

Just for clarrification..
My truck [04 5.7 hemi] would go into limp mode and sometimes stall for no reason. It would become worse when i filled the gas tank.As soon as i turned out of the parking lot it would go into limp mode [dead throttle peddle, but still idle]i could put it into neutral ,shut it off, restart and go.
Sometimes it would be ok for a mile or two but never would go away untill i got below 3/4 of a tank.
So after taking it to the dealer..which replaced the crank sensor, cam position sensor, cleaned the throttle body, and replaced the cpu...it went away for 2 weeks and then it was back with the same symtums.
Then i took it to another Dodge dealer the had it for 2 weeks and could not find what was causing the problem. They reflashed the cpu [updated].
And checked all wires and sensors. And could not find the cause.
I brought it home and drove it like this for a few weeks.
Finally i did some reserch and decided to change the battery, and gas cap..
The problem was still there. So i took apart the throttle body and pulled off the egr valve, and replaced it.Problem solved.

This is one thing I can't do. How much did you spend for them to work on it for 2 weeks and still not resolve the issue?
