The limited case is a lot squarer than the open carrier close to where the bearing caps go (so there is room for the clutch packs to fit).......while the open carrier tapers down.......hard to describe. I'll find some pics.

I don't see any clutch packs (or a ring gear). What vehicle is the "limited" unit from?

What? Maybe in that Georgia snow of yours, but up here a limited slip or locker beats an open diff hands down.

The ONLY benefit to an open diff is that the *** end doesn't kick out when spinning, but any competent driver can control a vehicle with a limited slip.

Mine had a stock LSD anti spin and this is a pic of my old one before I went with an Auburn LSD

It's a Dodge 9.25", and the clutch packs are in behind the side gears.
