4.7 towing
hey guys
im getting ready to buy a 01 trans am ws6 from lexington ky, i am located in albany, ny. the trip is 800 miles. my truck is only a crap 4.7. my manual says i can tow 7500lbs. the trailer is 2000lbs and the car weighs 3500lbs. so its only a total of 5500lbs. i just was wondering if anyone else tows with a 4.7 and what kind of gas milage i can expect. the truck can barely get out of its own way as it is, im scared to tow with it haha.

engine wise it only has 80k miles, all service always done on time. has a c.a.i and flowmaster side exaust. has stock 2011 20s with 33s(275/65/20) i believe they are, drive like a grandma, and the gears are stock 3.55s with limited slip.

my buddy wants to take his 1994 chevy dually diesel with the 6.5turbo diesel. it is a quad cab dually. i only know it has a 34 gallon tank but i cant find what it gets for gas milage. i also found it can tow 10,000lbs. anyone have any idea what it gets for gas milage? we will be getting the trailer from kentucky when we get there so we are driving just the truck itself on the way there so that should help a lot.

The diesel mileage would not drop as much when towing that load as your truck will drop. Your truck is not geared correctly for towing with a 3.55 with 33s but it will most likely make it. I would guess a car on a trailer would pull about the same as a boat of that weight. 10-12 mpg would be a guess and maybe less in the mountains.

Your truck is geared pretty tall to be towing, and that flowmaster isn't helping you any. As stated before, very difficult to guestimate this sorta thing, but I would recommend getting the superchips programmer to help you out if you use your truck. Probably won't help you a bit with mileage, but would help you with some needed power. At any rate, I would say look for the ~10mpg range. Also, what year is your truck? The '08 4.7 has a significant improvement in HP and torque from earlier models (+75HP to 310 and +35tq to 330).

I'm also 9 mpg with a car & trailer behind me. I would be very surprised if you see much more than that, especially with your gearing & those 20s. I'm guessing with 3.55s you don't have the factory tow package. If not, you may not have enough transmission cooler to pull it off. Then again, the weather will help you in this area since it's nice & chilly.
I don't know what kind of mpg those old diesels get. Obviously the truck is up to the tow (assuming it's maintained) but keep in mind that diesel costs more than premium unleaded. My last tow in an old diesel was just before they went turbo so it was slow but steady

I used to tow my RV with an 04 quad cab 4x4 4.7L truck. Scaled at 4400lbs on the trailer axles. Now the RV has a taller profile, more wind drag. I towed in mountains and a bit on the praries. I had a tow package, and the 3.92 gears with factory 20inch wheels. (factory size rubber, about 33") Against wind she would just keep around 55-60 mp/h. On the steep grades, lucky to do 30mp/h... maybe 40 on lesser ones. Flat land, no wind I could get up to passing speed of 70. Mileage, a solid 9-10mpg.
Will your truck do it, yes. Will it do it well, no. It will be slow. If I keep it around 50-55 with my setup it did a bit better on fuel. For a 1 shot tow you'd probably be fine. Estimate 9mpg towing... doing a reasonable 50-55. My 2500 hemi still only gets 9-10 towing the same RV. Most gas rigs are in that range. for any hill, rev that 4.7 up and run the hill a bit. It'll want to rev to make power...
