Default Help! Recon taillights and third brake light

Just installed recon tails and third brake light on my 07'. The quality and fit is not what I expected for such high price products.

The bulb socket supplied with tails for the reverse lighting doesn't lock in place like it should to ensure securement and a water tight seal.

On both the tails, outside edge has 1" gouge...in the same place. Looks like bad cutting from the lens mold. Other parts of the edge of lens are not cleanly cut, some excess lens material.

Fit on the lights requires a lot of patience pushing into place for matching body gaps. Still not like the OEM gaps...

The front of the tails where it meets with the bed body, there is a large gap. There will be easy water penetration and I need to fix this. Going to Play body shop and lineup weather striping in hopes to create a water barrier. ANYONE HAVE DIRECTIONS OR TIPS HOW TO FIX THIS?

The third brake light also has a gap where water can penetrate. I'm afraid water will get under the light, making its way to the roof body causing body and interior water damage. ANYONE HAVE TIPS ON THAT ISSUE?

The LEDs on the tails do look nice when lit, and I like the looks of the tails and third brake light. Problem is this is a daily driver and looks come after reliability. So much for paying for quality products that are "bolt-on" and being satisfied. Don't want to be fighting water damage issues... PLEASE HELP!!

I have their cab roof lights, have had them since '06 and they've been great. I have no personal experience with either their tail or 3rd brake lights but I know a guy who lives a couple of doors down from my mom who has both and I know they are Recons from talking to him.

I take my mom to do her banking/shopping on Thursdays (she won't drive while under the effects of her chemo). I'll see if I can ask the guy about his if he's around while I'm over there...

I am glad you posted this. Because i am currently on the fence about adding LED tail lights, with the big issue being quailty of the aftermarket parts.

Ebay has tons of great deals on LED replacements, but i have serious doubts as to the quality of a pair of tailights that cost less then one OEM tailight. I had been leaning towards GoRecon and Hella. With the latter being my preffered choice because Hella is a huge and well respected lighting company who makes OEM lighting for companies like Porche and BMW.

I had conisdered GoRecon as an alternate because they are well known and i figured for what they are charging, they muct be good. I had e-mailed their customer service department to ask if the tail lights were not on a direct bolt on, but a direct plug in for my 06' that would not need any resistors. The guy wrote back to "Look at the downloadable videos on our site". Which i did. And they make no mention of Dodge Specific applications or resistors. So i wrote him back and told him that. That was two weeks ago and i heard nothing back. So that answered my question, they don't care about customer service. And now you mention the quality is not there. So i am done with Go Recon. I have one of their tail light strips and half the LED's don't work.

That sucks. I really like the look of those lights. I was going to get the Sonar ones which is supposedly the company that makes them for Recon but this may change my mind.

I found a set on ebay that looks very nice. Lots of LED's and only $118 shipped. A lot of the ones you see have only a small area of LED's, i am looking for the most LED's possible. But my major issues are the fit like the issue being discussed in this thread and whether they will cause issues with the "BULB OUT" detection. Also, will they flash normally? I HATE that rapid flashing typical of when a bulb is out on a halogen system. I want the LED's to flash at the same rate my Halogen bulbs do now.

My ebay plug and play set was a perfect fit, no flash issues, and hasn't lost an LED in 5 years of operation. More expensive doesn't mean better!

Yes, because you don't have the CAN Bus system. That is what is causing the issues.

I have recon taillights and 3rd brake lights and the only issue i had was one of the wire connections was loose and one of the reverse lights wasnt working but all i had to do was push the pin in more and it has been fine ever since. I didn't have any fitment issues when installing.

I have had them in for about a year and a half now and they have been working perfect and look awesome.

I have Recon heads, tails & 3rd brake light. No fitment issues or concerns here. I had to contact them once and received excellent customer service.

Sounds like a given, but you ordered and received the correct tails, right?

Where does the CAN bus enter the equation? A light with the proper resistance is "seen" by the computer as a properly functioning bulb. There's nothing magical that other brands of lights do to keep the computer happy. People have successfully swapped the older stock tails into the newer trucks so we know there's nothing unique to the newer style lights except their appearance and a slight wiring change.

The CAN bus doesn't have anything to do with reverse light sockets that don't seal. It doesn't cause poor quality control and bad fitment of the lenses themselves.

They sell the "cheapy" brand of tails for the 07-08 for $150 + shipping. I stand by my first statement: More expensive does not mean better. I looked around at the Recon offerings and it looks like they either offer two styles of tails for 07-08 or somebody is selling a product that isn't Recon. One set of lights looks just like my "cheapy" lights at twice the price; the other looks different but looks much more "down market" than what I have at still twice the price.

That's why it's a marketplace though. People can buy whatever they want, and I guess some will be happier knowing they paid twice what I did even when the results are the same.
