The light on my 02 is on the drivers side and does out when the hood is halfway down, so I doubt there are any plungers in the play here.

I am very happy with the performance of the autozone led strips. The power required is so low it almost does not work in triggering a relay and the light output is quite high and the cost is 29.99 for the higher output lights

Ive had my hood off, there are no plunger switches, it's integral to the light assembly.

Bringing back a crusty thread.
I just ripped mine apart, the switch has a ball bearing in it. When the hood goes up, the ball rolls and makes the connection. They stopped using mercury many years ago....."brain problems and all".
I think I am going to use a couple LED strips you buy at WalMart and rig them to a plunger switch commonly found on security install kits. Not more cost effective, but more fun.

Yes indeed. Excellent job. I was thinking horizontally across the cross members of the hood since I don't have a fancy hood matt like you do. The angles of the cross members will aim the light straight down on the engine when the hood is up.

I bet your would very cool with the hood down and lights on.

Directly accross the hood = engine heat. That will kill the LED's as any electronics are rated for maximum of 180*. I'd be surprised if you could get anything to stick as well. Atleast on the sides there is cooling directly from the outside and away from rising engine heat.

It's not mercury or a plunger, its a ball switch (copper ball inside a copper bullet-like housing) easily cannibalized and soldered to if you want to reuse it in a led setup.

Also, check the lamp assembly out. It might not be the bulb that's shot although it probably is. The internals can get pretty rough in the light itself, it may just be a corrosion issue.

I have an original 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab (Hemi), first year of the mod-Hemi... she's about to turn 100K miles and I didn't have the under hood lamp even though it is a Laramie, should have been included. I bought the lamp and housing through a Mopar site but don't see where I can get the wiring attach to it? Guess I go to an auto electric shop and have them make the harness?
