2004 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 QC

Local junkyards are telling me that there is a difference between a 4wd and a 2wd rear end (the rear one of course). They don't know what it is, but the "numbers are different".

Is anyone aware of what the difference is? That shortens my list of donors!

No difference in them at all, both are 9.25 with the same brakes, 4x4 might have LSD and the 2wd might not.


I have a 9.25 from one that was totaled out, been trying to sell it..... Might be cheaper than the salvage is wanting....

 

Dealers have different part numbers between 2wd and 4wd on the empty housing. My LSD clips broke and ground into the bearing support, so I need a good housing.

Must be something different between 2 wd and 4 wd. I can't imagine why it'd be different, but they are somehow different. I'm leery of buying a 2wd version for my 4x4 truck until I know what is different.

No difference as far as fitment goes when your a 2wd installing a 4wd rearend. I dont think it has anything to do with Open or LSD equip either.

The 4wd has bump stops and the 2wd does not. This means you could install a 4wd on a 2wd but not the otherway around unless you fabricated up the bump stops. 2wd's dont need bump stops.
I'd imagine the "tiedowns" for the brake lines might be in a slightly different place, but who cares. Throw a couple of zipties or metal band wraps to hold them securely in place IF thats the case.
I found THIS and it actually looks like the brake lines spot is the same.
I really think the bump stops are the only difference. Maybe cut them off yours and weld them on the new one???

Presently in the process of putting a 2wd rear end into a 4wd truck. Yes, bump stops are missing for the 2 wheeler. However, I have air bags....which eliminate the requirement for bump stops.

I looked at my bumpstops, doesn't look like the rubber ever came into contact with them. I don't 4 wheel this truck (at least not yet). Also thinking they're not really doing much, they don't sit much higher than the axle tube. I suppose if it came down really hard *maybe* it'd dimple the tube, but I'm thinking those brackets might be over kill. Either way, if I wanted to add some they'd be an easy fab. Not much point of sawing off the originals.

 

Wondering if the spring brackets might be at a different angle, if the 2wd is lower than the 4wd they might do that to optimize and keep the joints as straight as possible.

 

Heres another pic for everyone.

Both 03 quads. Black one is 2 wheel drive. Housings look the same to me...except for the bump stops. Diffs are sitting a little different on the floor...due to the brake rotors on the black one.
