5.7 HEMI OIL CHANGES
OK, everyone has an opinion, so I would really like someone who has done any of the following, and tell me how it went. I have read all kinds of things about when why and where as far as oil changes and what to go with...
1. When (mileage) did you change to synthetic and what brand
2. Who has stayed with regular ole earl, and did you stay with the recommended??
3. can someone tell me why 5W-20... Just from what my Dad told me as a shade tree mechanic, it goes against all things holey...
4. I was told by the "dealer mechanics" that they broke the Motor in at the factory, and the oil in there is not break in oil..Hmmmm?? so I changed at 3K and now have 6K on it and want to change to synthetic, but am skeptical on how many miles... This is the opinion part, so if there is anyone out there that is not opinionated on this subject, some hard dang facts would be nice... cuz everything you read contradicts everything else...[sm=wtf.gif]

I change my oil every 3000, on my 3000 mark i used Quaker State high horsepower synthetic blend 10w-30, now going on 5300 miles and no problems, going to change it at 6000, i will probably stick to the same Quaker unless i find something better for the price.

Opinions are like broke down chevys, every redneck has one.
Good luck with your choices and welcome to Dodge Forum.

I switched to a full synthetic at 15,000 miles I went with Royal Purple 5-20 as recommended by the dealer I've had no probs, and I change it every 6000 miles even though Royal Purple says I can go 12,000 miles before a change.
After 3K I put Syn Mobile 1 in mine. I run 5K on a oil change, also use the mobile 1 filter. The factory oil that came out at 3K looked more dirty than the 5K syn I took out at 8K. I also go with the engine designers and put in 5w20.
People who say I been putting in 10w40 in my car my whole life, those engineers are out of their mind... They are living in the 50s and 60s. They would probably rather have a carburator bolted to the intake as well.

i dont remember for sure from working at the dealer, but if i remember right all 04 and newer rams need to use 5-30 or 5-20. I switched over to Mobil 1 syn at my 3K oil change and been changing it every 4500. and then all the hemi's with the MDS(multiple displacement system) need to run 5-20, but i dont that is available untill 06 i believe. and then of course in all the 300C and magnums, so on.

I have the 4.7 engine. I just did the first oil change in mine at 3000 miles. I let the dealer do it and i noticed that the dealer put 10w30 instead of the 5w30 the book says. Asked my dad about it and he said the weight of the oil one needs is determined by the climate the person lives in. He said the 5w oils are best for colder climates. I live in NC and here it tends to get hotter rather than colder. We usually dont get much below freezing at all arond here. He said the 10w was better because of the hotter summers and so forth we have. Since the dealer put the 10w in I suppose they know what they are doing. Truck seems to run fine on it.
I went to Mobil1 5w30 at 6000. As important as the oil is the filter. If you do a search on here, there's been alot of talk about them as well. Most centers around staying away from Fram, NAPA Gold and Wix seem best.
As far as the different vis's, 04 recommended 5w30, they went with 5w20 on the 05.

Yes the 2003-2004 use 5w-30 and the 2005+ use 5w20. I guess some of it is energy management, takes less energy to pump a 20w oil and if it does it's job of lubrication all's well that ends well. The MDS was designed to use the lighter 5w-20.
For me, I ive mine a steady diet of 5w-30. Will switch to synthetic at 15K (makes the math easier for 5K mile oil changes, the only reason I'm waiting, besides the money).
