Default running air filter straight off the plenum.

I was gonna buy a spectre filter and just run it straight off the plenum then make a heat sheild to cover about half of it. is this just getting out cheap or you think it'll work just fine.or i might build my own intake and run it to the stock location where the air comes in. any thoughts? i also have a flashpaq on the 91 tune and flowmaster 50 series exhaust, if that helps. thanks

Build a intake, too much radiant hot air there, I grabbed a ebay intake that runs into right corner of the engine bay. 37.00 had it in 3 days from California to CT. Filter is same build quality etc as spectre. Very happy with it. Picked up 1mpg on avg and sounds nasty, love it.

I am running an aFe Stage 1 intake. Basically, it's an airbox replacement. Removed the upper part of the airbox and filter completely and replaced it with the one from aFe. It also comes with a 9"X5"x4.5" or so conical filter. It's huge. It uses all the stock plenum and throttle body hat. I would have gone for their stage 2 kit. The only differences were a slightly different airbox replacement, and complete piping from the filter to the TB. Oh, yeah and more $$$...I figured if I wanted to go that route, I'd just fab up my own piping. Go to the aFe website and you'll see. I can post pics too.

took these before I cleaned up the rest of the engine bay...

im trying to keep the build under 50 bucks, and the filter is 25 bucks so the rest goes for tubing, or i guess i could just use the stock tubing that goes into the air box.any more thoughts?? thanks

Use the rest and go to Home Depot or Lowe's. Buy some PVC and the correct elbow and some silicone or rubber reducers for the flanges. High temp paint and install. There is a DIY on here for the intake. Look in the DIY stickys on here.

Filter is your choice - no reason for or against ether one really.

Don't forget a spot for your air temp sensor in your new pipe!

ok, thanks guys. gonna use 3" chedule 40 pvc with an oiled spectre filter and some duplicolor high temp engine enamel to match the red of my truck. Didnt forget about the silicone coupler.Ive seen so many built on here that look likethey would cost abot 300 bucks. Should i use pvc glue for the joints or silicone them together?? Guess pvc glue should be fine, right?
