Transmission overheat after headder install
03 Ram 1500 with 5.7L HEMI 200k miles on trans, 3K miles on engine (installed factory surplus motor).
I have recently installed long tube headders and magnaflow dual cat back system and now my trans temp. reaches 220 degrees. Before the install, it never reached over 170 degrees. I have changed both filters and the fluid...disconnected the cooler lines and cooler, and made sure they were clear by blowing air through them. Anyone else have this problem? I have tried headder wrap, but that had no effect. The headders don't collect until more than half way down the transmission and the two cat's on the y pipe are at the rear of the transmission. Is this a common problem with installing headders, or is this a clue to something beginning to break inside of the transmission?
I have installed:
Bullydog programmer
CAI
JET throttle body spacer
OBX longtube headders
Magnaflow 3" in dual 2 1/2" out cat back system
Recent replaces (within 20k miles):
all wheel bearings
all fluids and filters
shocks and springs (factory replacement)
driveshaft u-joints
differential bearings

It happened right after I put the headders on. I got OBX headders that has 2 cats (one for each side). At first, it would only heat up like 20 degrees more. To about 190. Now it's reaching 220 and I even changed both filters and fluid at least twice since it was installed in spring along with a factory surplus new engine. The trans has 200K miles on it. I'm considering a tranny rebuild before it starts slipping. I have talked to three local tranny experts and they tell me not to worry until it gets above 235. But if that happens, things start breaking.
OK, Problem found and solved. Apparently there was a pinhole leak in the wielding of one of the tubes to the flange. The black soot in a v shape pointed me right to it. It was blowing right onto one of my tranny cooler lines. I pulled out my Tig and sealed the hole. everything is back to normal. (yes, some of us have the tools to do the wielding ourselves) Got both a tig and a mig along with a plasma cutter in my garage at home.
