Default TIPM (totally integrated power module) interchangability

About a month ago I got the dreaded No Bus code. Dealer said it was the TIPM. I refuse to pay the $1100 to replace it. I'm gonna pull it and clean up the connections and put some dielectric grease in there to make sure that isn't the problem. Other than that, I was wondering if these are interchangeable between different years? I have found an 08' one and an 06' with the same part number (I have an 2007 Laramie). I'm not sure if I could swap those in or not..anyone have info on this?

Definately NOT interchangeable! Even the same year tipm would need to be programmed to your specific vehicle/cluster.
They also need to be programmed via Starscantool which means you are at the mercy of the dealership.
2006 ones are up around $900 installed(these had most troube with trailer fuse circuit)
2007's are about $7-800 installed
2008's are least expensive ay about $6-700 installed.
HERE's a brand new one for $650 shipped and all you need to do is instal ; it and have it programmed by dealer. You cannot start/drive until then as it needs to be properly configured to your truck.

They have specific years and options as far as TIPMs go when ordering, then they need to be programmed to your vin #.

Now, you could buy one online, install it yourself in the dealer parkinglot and then pay for them to program it at 1hr diagnostic fee because it only takes them 15min.

There is such a thing as a tipm Re-configuration which allows the dealer to flash everything to initial settings and clear all the codes out / If vods are still Active after a reflash then there is a def problem. Dealers are quick to suggest a full replacement because most dont know how to properly diagnose electrical issue's. Let's face it, they are mechanics(mechanical) not electrical engineers!
No bus Comm could be faulty airbag module, no radio, popped cigar fuse which doesnt allow Comm through OBD-II plug and ofcourse there could also be a short somewhere as all the circuits are canbus(multiple operations fed off one line)This causes many issue's for one short.

Thanks for the heads up Rich. I found one online for very cheap, it matches the part number to the one you sent me on ebay but it ends in AG instead of AL. Any issues with that possibly? I don't see the letters on my TIPM part number at all. Anyway, if you think that is something that is worth buying let me know because its exponentially cheaper than the other one. I'm selling the damn thing anyway so as long as it starts i'll be happy.

Not sure on AL vs AG. Could be diesel vs gas vs v6...dunno. Could even be for a dakota or durango. I canot say.
I don't know wht programming is preset or if any at all in the new TIPM's.
I doubt you'll be able to even start your truck and if so, you'll set off tons of lights.
Lets not stick it to the next guy... Just go park in the deal lot, change out the tipm and walk into service dept and say you need it to be programmed or what they call Configuring it. It takes 20min to swap out if that(Just dont break the clips) and another 20min for them to configure it.

The ONLY issue with buying online and having dealer program it....No real warranty

Default tipm swap

Hi everyone, I just join the forum. A lot of us here have problems with our dodge tipm(fuse box) and wonder if you can swap one from the junkyard. The answer is YES.. My 2016 ram 1500 crew cab v6 3.6L 4x4 cigar light doesn't have power one day, so I looked at the tipm. I found a few fuses and relays with lots of corrosion and I started cleaning them. Also cleaned the plugs connected to the tipm. Still, got no power. I left it alone until couple of months later when my truck wouldn't start. I got engine light on with code U0100(lost of communition). I picked one up from junkyard($100), a 2016 ram 1500 single cab v6 3.6L 4x4 with same part number and swapped it. I turned fob key to "ON POSITION"(ENGINE IS OFF) for 12 seconds and then turn to "OFF POSITON". I then started the truck with no engine light and cigar lighter also has power. It's been a month of driving and 600 miles on it without any problems. From my understanding the donor's tipm with the same part number and same engine size will work. If you buy a new one is $400, $80 for installation, and $160 for flash(programming) from dealer. I was told by the service department that the new one needs to be program because its empty. How true is that I don't know. I figured that the dealer needs your truck vin number to buy a new, it would come preprogram. Hope this help.

Just out of curiosity. If you had a 2016, and the TIPM went out. Why not go get it warranty repaired? Reason I ask, people upload misleading information all the time and this just makes no sense. Is your truck REALLY a 2016 or a 2006? Was it a type-o? I’m looking to swap my TIPM to fix a few problems with my 2012. Wondering if it’s that simple. Mine is out of warranty. Whereas yours was UNDER warranty. Weather you were 1st or 3rd owner. It’s barely over a year old now. Should have been fixed under warranty.

Dealer will not warranty corroded tipm because they said we some how got moisture in it and that's why it got corroded. The reason I use we is because I found others online in the same situation. I forget to mention sometimes my AC doesn't work and the airbag light is on too. Also the vent control **** also doesn't function right either. It will only blow air in the windshield and floor position.I now have more than 2000 mile on the junkyard tipm without any problem. Now after playing in the snow with 4x4, I will check and wipe down tipm area. Also after a driving through a car wash. Can you tell me the problems you having with your truck.

Default Tipm

I would have caught that with the dealer. Bumper to bumper warranty. If it got moisture into the terminals and became corroded it sounds like a faulty seal and definitely should be covered. But what’s done is done. Mine had an issue wi H the cluster but fixed it. Thankfully I do SMD repairs and such. Do you still have your old TIPM? I’m also working on something that I plan on posting in the future but won’t and can’t release anything till I actually do it. Glad you got your ram fixed and good to know it’s easy swap.

Sorry about the type-os. That’s so frustrating that the dealership wouldntbtak care of that. Especially since it’s more than just 2 or 3.

I had had issues with my fuel pump relay but replaced that and have had no issues.

The dealership here here in Las Vegas would not fix my exhaust leak. Was still under warranty, and they claimed it was lifter Tao. After it warmed up it went away. Wrong. They also said they checked and I had no broken bolts or missing bolts. Wrong again. I found 3 broken on passenger and 1 mission on drivers with 2 broken. Both manifolds were severely warped. Had about 1/16 warp on one end of the drivers and almost 1/8th on the passenger. I filed a claim and of course provided pictures and all receipts showing I used dealer parts. It was denied. Won’t give me a reason either. I love the rams but I’m very pissed with their tactics when it comes to warranty stuff. Especially with TIPM going out due to corrosion.

So so I have found that you can get a TIPM from a truck that has features you want like TPMS, ITBCM, the steering whee radio controls etc. put that TIPM in and you will now get those features.

There was was a guy in Florida that was adding features into tipms. But since you can change TIPMs without issues. You can add features that way too.

So so now you can do the steering wheel volume controls. Add overhead console with compass and display on EVIC (if you have EVIC cluster). TPMS display in EVIC and more. I’m waiting for tax money to further this test but so far I’ve had success.

2012 Ram 1500 express crewcab Hemi. I have EVIC working along with steering wheel controls and TPMS.
