Default need a boost every time i gas up

i have a 2007 ram quad cab 1500 hemi. i am able to start every morning, everytime i turn truck off during the day. however, this is the second time ive gotten gas, turned off vehicle and went to start and it wont turn over?! i did have a back up battery in my bed but someone stole it! :-( i do have the gascap code and 456 & 457 codes both pertain to gas cap codings?.. i was told to start vehicle pull red battery cable to see if its the altinator, but my thoughts are if it was the alt, then i would have to boost it every morning.
can anyone help me please.
oh and one more thing is the alt considered part of the drive train?

I do not believe the alternator is considered part of the drivetrain, no. You may need to visit a $tealership and buy a new gas cap to get rid of the codes.

When you say it wont turn over, do you mean nothing, or it drags real bad, and not sufficient enough to turn it over fast enough to crank? Couple options, but I would pull the battery out, carry it to a parts store or some where similar and have it tested. They can check it under a load and see if it is failing there. Something else you can check is the battery voltage with the engine off, good battery should be 12.4 vdc plus. Then start the engine and see if battery voltage goes up. If so then this is your alternator output charging the battery. Should go up to about 13 + vdc . This means alternator should be ok. But like I said just measuring voltage does not mean it can put out enough amperage under load to turn the motor over.

DON'T disconnect the battery when the motor is running! You can cook some very expensive electronic gizmos. No, the alternator is not part of the drive train. You don't need a gas cap from the dealer, though. AAP, AZ and the rest of the "big box" parts houses should have one. Wally-World may, as well.

Yeah I agree with not pulling battery terminal while running. That used to be an old school way of diagnosing a bad alternator. Like Mike said, it was before all the electronics and computers now installed on current vehicles. Just asking for trouble if you do.

I replaced my gas cap from an auto parts store several years ago, never had an issue with it.

If it was the alt, or battery you're right, it would be every morning and not isolated to after refueling.

Are you topping it off? Here in Jersey people pump our gas. They would always top it off and I would sometimes stall when tank was overfull. Issue stopped when I started telling them not to top it off.

Cool

The first time was a complete fill the second time was only 1/4 of a tank so can't be the case

Okay will not remove cable while running.

I have to buy a gas cap and a 9v battery for my volt meter and that won't be til Fri.

What else could be the problem?

Check the battery connection, clean and reseat. Check the neg cable, and where it attaches to motor/frame. Could be bad ground.

I just went through the same thing. When it was a cold/off for a while I had no problems. But if I shut it off hot, it cranked very slowly if it started at all. Turner out that when the starter was hot it wasn't spinning properly, replaced it and haven't had a problem since. Also battery and alt were tested and good before I swapped starter. Try taking it off and have it tested
