Default Broken wheel studs

I've got the 8 hole 3/4 ton wheels and I'm loosing wheel studs left and right. started after a tire shop installed new wheels and tires but that was over a year ago.

i've got one missing on each front and 2 now missing on the left rear. what gives with this? i've never known wheel studs to break off like this.

Studs will snap if the shop over-torqued the lugs. Sometimes the 'kid' at the shop just guns the lugs without a torque bar and just goes until they don't move anymore. This will stretch the studs until they get weak and snap. I absolutely hate having someone else put my wheels on because of this. I'll gladly have a tire shop mount my tires, but if I can't watch them mount it to the truck, then I get very nervous

also heavy tires on ill fitting rims will snap the bolts, seen a couple Rams with 3 big tires and one rotor with the lugs sheered off

Yep watch out for them not watching there torque, i would assume since it started after the tire shop that they are to blame.

Even torque sticks are not that great. Ask the shop hand torque your wheels. If they won't take your business else where. I used to work at a tire shop, after about a year torque sticks become less acurate. Good old hand torque wrench never fails. Ask the shop what they torqued your wheels too. That way you know if they are over torqued before you leave. Most trucks are 130-160 FT LBS. Its been a year since I worked in a shop, so my numbers maybe off.

I think in a lot of shops, the lugs are torqued to "that's probably enough" lol :/

Yup, the lugs have been tightened past the yield strength and as a result, they're snapping------but you already knew that, now its time to get 24 new studs, a press and a service manual, you may have to pull the axles to press the old ones out, and the new ones in, or you could wait until they all snap off at once on one wheel, roll back and cave in the body panels as the truck rolls over the tires----don't laugh, it happened to a buddy of mine with a 66 elcamino that had a tricked out mouse motor

check your warranty and receipt if you still have it. They might be liable for replacing the studs. It depends on any disclaimers they might have. Try to get them to replace them for free.

thanks for the replies guys...yeah thts what I figured.

I went back to the shop and the guy reluctantly told me that he would get me a few new studs and call me. I never heard from him. so I'll just do it myself.

what's the issue with getting the rear studs out? hope I don't have to remove the hub.
