5.9 gas 1999 ram wont start
hey all well here is another wont start dodge problem.
I was going down the road at around 60 and the engine started sputtering then stalled dead.
here is what ive checked so far.
all plugs and wires new
tried either to start nothing
has fire but to me doesent look right
all fuses and relays ok ASD, Fuel etc all check good
im pretty sure im getting gas i pushed the valve on the fuel rail and fuel came out,i have noway to check pressure or get the fuel line off im guessing its a dealer tool.
what i did see that bugged me was the rotor botton was a lil worn, and the center botton on the dist cap looks burnt but im getting fire so not shure what to think about that.
ive looked in the service manual and have done what i can with the tools i have.
thanks for any help

You'll get a lot better help in the second gen section, but what you describe is classic crank position sensor failure.. the ckps is a ***** to swap out.. it's near the oil filter, hanging out on the bell housing.. it reads the flex plate magnets to know when to fire the cylinders, and monitors timing by doing so.. ignition timing is known solely by using this sensor, as the dizzy was retired for such use..
Don't bother with an aftermarket sensor.. grab one from the stealership.. they're a biyatch to.swap and you'll only want to do it once every 200k or so..

i didnt see a thing in the service manual for a "crank" senser? i know about the "cam" sensor in the dist. thanks for the words of wisdom

Yessir.. the cam sensor is right where you figure.. folks call it the cps.. the ckps, or crank position sensor, is different, and often confused..
It's such an important sensor that I've often wondered why there isn't redundancy on these things.. if it goes, it can leave you stranded.. sometimes they misbehave for a while before giving up the ghost, but not always..
