Default How many of you manly men have rebuilt a tranny?

I'm gonna tear into it this weekend. I've got the 4wd so I'm guessin' I gotta drop the transfer case along with the tranny. I'm puttin in new OD clutches.

For those of you who have rebuilt a tranny, how much time can I expect to spend on this project? Any advice?

I had mine done last month, everything comes out. Im not manly enough to rebuild it my self, but I stoped in a bunch of times and watched the old timer work on it.

I rebuilt an automatic trans back in tech school years ago. It's not all that bad depending on your skill/comfort level. Buy yourself a rebuild kit which should have everything you need like seals, gaskets, o rings, as well as the clutches. Make sure to maintain a clean, organized work area, keep all clutch packs and clutches together, label parts, and coat them in assembly lube.

My inlaws own a trans shop and each guy they have build three a day in 8 hrs. I personally think after watching them every Tuesday for the last year rebuild them teardown looks fairly simple but I still wouldn't attempt it unless you have some sort of knowledge of a trans. One day they will give me hands on. Good Luck

Honestly, the rebuilding part I'm not all that intimidated about. I've got a nice warm shop to work in. The part that I'm not looking forward to is removing the transmission. It seems really difficult.

Hopefully you got a trans jack to make things a bit easier when you do it.

The only two places I have never done work. I did not install my own 4.56 gears or LSD but did all my other work. I would try to set a ring and pinion on a weekend beater or project truck, but at the time, my truck was just over a year old and booked for over $30,000 still and I wasn't going to chance it.

The other is an automatic transmission. That's VOODOO sh*t to me and I doubt I will ever mess with one, LOL...
