Another "interesting" quirk about my truck and maybe not related to anything but I thought I would ask around anyway.

I was doing a 5 point turn today and had the truck in reverse with the wheels cut nearly full crank. I put it in reverse and hear this odd grinding noise, but it sounds more like smaller plastic gears skipping but inside the cab.

It sounded to me like it was coming from around the steering column, and it only happened in reverse. I put it in D and no noise, back into reverse and it did it again.

It only did this once.

Is there any small motors or solenoids up front that would make this kind of noise?

Just curious if anyone else has heard this before.

 

Don't think so... sounds like you might have stressed the power steering pump a little bit at full lock, which sometimes will sound funny...

If it happens again you might want to check it all out...

 

I don't think it was the pump, I'm familiar with it's sounds and do my best to avoid going all the way with it, and NEVER force it.

I should mention that I've heard the same noise before when shifting into/out of reverse from drive/park....it makes this whirring noise for maybe 1/2 second during that time between when you select the gear, and the gear engages. But it was much quieter than what happened today.

it's not a "heavy" noise, it sounds like something small is what's making it.

She's full of surprises this one.

 

The whirring sound when shifting from forward to reverse or park is the solenoid pack in the transmission selecting the gears.
No biggy..... All the 545rfe boxes do it.
As for the noise up front.... R u a 4x4 because it could be the front cv joints binding on full lock.

yes, but 4WD wasn't engaged.

 

I think I know the sound you are referring to; my truck makes it and my wife's Sebring also used to make it. I think it's a Dodge/Chrysler thing in the transmission.

 

It sounds just like the whirring mentioned above by abarmby, except it was a bit louder and only made the noise when I was moving in reverse.

 

unless the transmission slips I think you are okay for now....

 

That's the thing about this truck, for all the problems it does have, it generally runs just fine, except that it has on a couple of rare occasions it stalled out when I stopped or slowed down.

Other than that for a truck with 258,000km it's in decent mechanical shape.....rad leak, but at least it's not a head gasket

So from time to time something strange happens that doesn't seem to have any real explanation and I come here to find out if anyone else has experienced such oddities lol.

 

lol your truck seems to have some "character" to the point that it may have been a human in it's past life.....

Did you end up doing that transmission line pressure mod...?
