idler pully issue
now know there have been a lot of posts about pullys seizng, squealing, grinding and so on well heres another one. my father has a 07 1500 5.7 hemi that had one of the idler pullys blow up and the only thing that was left is the outer and inner baring races. now i know how to replace pullys and all that so my question would be is the stem the pully is mounted on permanetly attached to the timing belt cover or is it replaceable? since my father thought it wise to keep driving for a good month with no pully and the outer bearing race wore through the inner and dug in to the stem. i hope some one can help me get an idea of what im geting in to before i rip it apart in the drive way and the countinue to rip my hair out.

Snakeyes,
I had the same thing happen to one of my 2003 5.7L idler pulleys! It appeared, when I replaced the pulley that the mounting nipple was cast into the water pump. I recall mounting one of the idlers that had its own base, but one of the others attached directly to the water pump casting.
I expect that the 03 & 07 5.7L water pumps are designed similarly, so I will check to see if I can find the installation instructions with diagrams...
Regards,
Carlos

Snakeyes,
I went back and looked at a few diagrams of the pump and noticed only about a 1/4" nipple for the idler pulley near the pump outlet. The nipple centers the pulley and the bolt pulls the bearing race down tight against the pump to align it. That nipple should be a bit protected in the event of a bearing failure since the bearing race should stay in place, despite the bearing failure...
