So it is (and was) only shifting one time? I wonder if the shift indicator/cluster is jacked up.

When I put it in drive, it goes like normal. 1st gear then second. When it is changing to 3rd, the transmission disengages and the engine just revs. If I put the gear selector back from drive to 2nd it engages. reverse is fine.

I have tried using tow/haul button button and that did not make a difference either.

I didn't drive far when it happened. as soon as the engine started revving. I pulled over. When I realized that 3rd gear was not engaging. I left it in 2nd gear and drove home. I was less than 2 miles in second gear.

I've not heard of this one. Hopefully someone with real knowledge will jump in here. I presume the fluid level is correct when the tranny is hot?

Fluid level was good before it happened and is fine since i did the filters. I just sucks that I only have 41,000 miles and never towed or carried anything heavy.

That is a shame. Mine tows a utility trailer from time to time. Max GCWR has been ~13,000#. The PO towed a two-horse trailer (a LOT - 86K in four years). I did a drop 'n' drain after I bought it. Now at 121K - No tranny issues in all that time. Hope you get it figured out.
