My '04 Dodge Ram's low fuel light comes on with a full tank and the truck shuts off (while driving or in park) and will not crank. No other dash lights come on. It is not throwing any codes. The alternator and the battery are fine. Any suggestions about what may be my problem? Thanks!

Does your fuel gauge register empty as well? Sounds like it's a connection to the pump or the pump/sending unit as well. Why it won't crank, I don't know.

Kinda sounds like a fuel pressure problem. Do you "run it down to fumes"?

The gauge works and still shows full tank when the low fuel light comes on. I have been known to let it get to an 1/8 of a tank but I try not to wait for the low fuel light to come on to get gas...

Sounds like a fuel pump problem.

They are cheap enough and easy enough to replace I'd give that a shot.

But if you really want some proof before you go buy a fuel pump, then get a pressure test done on each rail, if you aren't getting any fuel pressure then it's a pretty safe bet that it's your fuel pump.

Could also be the sending unit....

Thats all good, but what would cause the no crank issue? Low fuel pressure wouldn't keep the truck from turning over!!!

Yes it will... If you have little or no fuel pressure the truck won't ignite the Air-Fuel Mixture until it builds up enough inside the cylinder to allow for the truck to complete a few combustion cycles...

So yes it can and will cause that problem.

If you want to check your fuel system throw a fuel pressure gauge on each of the fuel rails and see where you're at.

Both of the links I provided you give you a place to look at to try and find the problem.

I cranked my 2006 hemi off and on for about 3 minutes before I tapped the gas tank. I can assure you there was no pressure in the rails, as the fuel pump was not operating. I could have cranked it till my battery went dead. Are you saying the pcm knows the pressure in the rails and will keep the starter from engaging if the pressure isn't there?? If so, then I would agree with what you are saying, and my pcm is defective.

Maybe the OP saying "engine will not crank" meant it wouldn't fire. I take it to mean the engine wouldn't turn over at all. As in no starter engagement. Obviously, if the fuel pressure is too low, or non-existant, the engine will not fire. It should still Crank though.
