Default RE: SRT-10 Push button

I just installed one. I got mine from Art at Henson Motors out of texas. The phone number is 1-800-530-5337. The part number, according to my verification email is 7997276729. He advertises them for sale on Ebay all the time.

I installed mine this weekend, and I have a couple of thoughts on the subject.
1. In all of my research on this topic, no one mentioned in any post that when you take the cigarette lighter out of the dash, that the hole is not perfectly round, nor that the opening was too big. I had to figure how to make it look good. As it turns out I did some manipulating that, I think, worked fine, I bought a Chrysler master cylinder rubber gasket that was roughly the right size, cut out the circle center and trimmed the outside ring so it fits in the hole. The inside hole and outside fit perfectly. I’ll post pics when I get a chance.

2. I knew there was no way to attach it to the back, so I epoxied some plastic nuts to the back of the bezel. That worked great! Now I can remove the button should it fail, and it fits snug.

3. Tapping into the wires was easy. I got some “wire taps†from Radio shack, they made the connection go perfectly, no cutting. Port number one to the hot wire of the cig lighter, pin number 2 to the yellow wire coming out of the steering column. It works sweet!

4. If you don’t care about “all mopar†the s-2000 button is a better set up, has a chrome ring, makes dash fitment much easier, and no rubber gasket needed. BUT I could not have a Honda button firing up my Ram, so I made due.

5. To do it right, you really ought to get the SRT 10 bezel, however, that sets you back a couple of hundred dollars. I did not want to spend that much money; but for the “right look†you ought to consider it.

In the end I am very happy with the set up. My boys love firing up the beast with the button. I’m DEFINITELY putting one in my Cuda!

Sweet! I really want one of these as well. Where did you get the rubber gasket that you needed? Please let us know! I'm interested in doing this mod...

So wiring it up was pretty easy huh?

I got the gaskets from Autozone, in those orange HELP! packages. The inner circle is like 7/8 of an inch the outer just over an inch. Wiring is the easiest part.

I spent a good long time trying to figure how it would go together, because no one ever told me that the button needed an outside circle, and no one would seem to confess as to how the made the connection to the dash. I used a huge glob of epoxy on plastic nuts, figuring that it didn't matter how pretty it was on the back side of the bezel, and I may eventually want to replace the button, should it fail, so glueing the button was not an option. I used contact cement on the outer ring.

Wiring took less than 10 minutes. I read that the yellow wire from the steering column was the right one to use. Just for good measure I checked it with my sensor by cranking it over while the probe was in the connection, and yes it was correct. These blue wire taps from radio shack just required a crimping and all done - no cutting.

I'll go out and snap a photo with the camera phone, it may not bee good quality, but it can give an idea.

Henson Motors sells it for $35.00 (plus shipping) mine was totaled about $42.00 - if MSRP is about $50.00, it sounds like they are a good deal!

This afternoon I inadvertantly started it with the Key. I quickly shut it off and used the button

That turned out looking super nice! Newb question here, but where are those wires under the steering column? I haven't actually stuck my head under there to look, but I was feeling around earlier while I was driving and didn't feel anything. Did you have to pop the plastic piece off somehow?

Also, I noticed that S2000 button on Ebay. However, it has prongs on the back where it would "plug in" to the Honda I suppose. Could I just cut this part out and expose the wires? Not sure which route I should take.

First, the both the SRT 10 switch and the S2000 switch just have prongs on the back. I went to radio shack and bought some insulated female connectors to plug into the switch.

Second, the wires are accessible under the dash right along the steering column. It is easier to pop the plastic piece off to access the wires, it has two screws on the bottom corners and just pop fasteners at the top. Take off the screws, and pop it off (I’m talking about the rectangle plastic piece under the steering wheel.)

My thoughts on the S2000 button. It certainly looks nicer, and has the chrome ring already on it, and I understand it is easier to install, but at the end of the day, I have been a mopar fan from before I was 8, so I couldn’t see putting the Honda switch in; however, someone a little less biased, who wants a sweet looking button, I can’t fault using the S2000 button.

Thanks for your help man, it's much appreciated.

Just one last question. Did you pull that entire cigarette lighter metal piece out? I guess I could just use a flathead screwdriver? I was hoping I didn't have to take off the entire dash or anything.

Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks

Yeah, you pull off the dash bezel, it comes off super easy, there is a screw behind the grocery bag holder, you take that out and then gently pry off the whole bezel. You will see that the stereo stays in the dash, and the climate controls come off with the bezel, you can unclip those and if you have a regular cab, the airbag on/off switch. Then you take the entire cigarette lighter assembly out of the bezel. That’s when I epoxied in the nuts, let it sit for a few hours and then attached the button. While it was drying, I attached the wires to the plug, and tested and taped into the wires under the dash. It takes a while to do it this way, but I am pleased with the results. The longest time was simply letting the epoxy dry – and while waiting for that I was actually off doing other stuff, so it worked out nice.

Good luck! I absolutely love this modification!
