Default 04 Ram - volt gauge randomly dies

Anyone else have this issue? I will be driving and my instrument cluster will ding, the check gauges light will come on and the battery volt gauge on the IC will be to the far left. I have verified voltage output with my meter at 14v+. I can turn off the truck and restart it and it swill be OK. Odd and weird. But before I go digging in the Service Manual, i thought I would ask

Have you got your alternator tested? Just had a guy come in to my store today with a similar problem. His alternator was putting out enough power to keep his truck running but wasn't able to charge his battery and his gauge would show less then 12 volts on his dash.

It'dgett ing tested tomorrow. I swear it was reading 14v earlier but I just checked 10mins ago and it was barely hitting 11v

Yeah it's got to be that alternator. We don't have external voltage regulators so I would assume that's what is going out. Or it could even be the diodes.

Same problem before, it was intermittent. Turned out to be the alternator.

Mine did the same after going through a big puddle and again when I blew my power steering pump seal and got fluid all over the engine. Both times caused the belt to slip on the alternator and the gauges did just as you described.

I have seen this problem a lot, and every time but one it was the alternator. The one exception being a guy hooked up some jumper cables wrong and fried the voltage regulator that's internal to the ECM.

No worries. All is resolved. It was the alternator. Cool thing is that I had the 136A and now have the 160A. Bought it from Advanceautoparts and paid for it online. I used a discount code good for the Labor Day weekend and got 40% off the original price of $160 which brought it down to around $96 + taxes. Not bad. Took 10 mins to take off and put on.

Funny thing is though, on their website under the customer questions, someone asked where this alt is made and Advanceautoparts online support answered it was made in Canada but mine had a big stickler it that said it was made in China...... LoL

They probably manufacture the parts in Canada, ship them to china to assemble, ship it to Mexico the test and install (OEM).
