Got it.

And I just realized this is a 4.7....I know the early ones have magnesium covers. What do the later ones have? Aluminum?

Looks like plastic to me. I'd think magnesium would've shattered. His looks like someone took a chain saw to it.

Doing a compression test today. Looks like detonation in cyl 1.

Replaced the PCV valve when I did the head gaskets last month.
I should know tonight if I blew the motor up

Out of curiosity, what type and octane fuel are you using?

I recently experienced a very similar incident with the valve cover in my durango. I fill it up with non ethanol fuel. Would that be the cause? I had recently changed the rocker arms prior to this happening. I could post pics if needed. It still runs and drives but doesn't sound too good.

Truck has been running fine, but I took the camper out this week end only a 30 min drive from home.

Heading there everything is good. coming home I see a check engine light come on. I'm driving up a long hill kinda steep. and check engine light comes on. Top the hill hook my code scanner to it and it shows a miss fire on 2.. I'm about halfway home and that's the worst hill so I puppy it home.

5 min from home I stop at a light a very small hill. when I pull away i get a loud BOOM a cloud of white smoke. Motor is still running I turn the corner quick and pull into a parking lot. Pop the hood and the valve cover is blown apart.

anyone have any insight, I'm thinking a back fire due to the misfire.
My buddy who does all my mechanic work (50 years as a mechanic) sees it and says he never saw a valve cover blow apart like that.

haven't gotten it apart yet to see if anything else is wrong but still only show a 302 code in the scanner.
