I am planning on installing a set of used HO camshafts, they are in pretty good shape. No worn spots, rust, or any signs of damage/wear. What is the best products and method of cleaning the camshaft, and lubrication prior to install? Cam bearings, lash adjusters, etc? Is there a break in procedure for a different size camshaft? And anything else I failed to mention.....
I may have a problem now, after cleaning the cams up I noticed that one of the lobes have a couple small scratches. They are not deep or long and appear to have happened when the guy I bought them from removed them. He is not what you would consider mechanically inclined and I insisted that I could remove them but he didn't want a stranger at his house. Anyways is there a rule of thumb on stuff like this? All lobes have the same wear pattern. I'm thinking about using some 1000 grit wet sandpaper and oil or kerosene to smooth it out. Any thoughts?
I will give them a call but after a lot of digging most say it will be fine as long as you can't feel them or your fingernail doesn't catch any of the scratches. If I do have to have it machined or buffed then wouldn't that change the profile of the cam.
There are different ones and your choice is going to depend on the scratch. Honestly, if you cant hit it with your fingernail, I wouldnt bother. This isnt a NASCAR engine
