Haven't heard from OP at all. Hope he lets us know what was wrong. It's frustrating when someone jumps on to this forum, asks a question, gets a bunch of ideas, and never posts again.

Yea I understand what you mean I bought mine new to, Just not everyone has money to spare.
Buying it new most likely comes with a lifetime or 2 year warranty so If he has the money thats where I would go with it!

The OP said his truck will fire and run only if the pedal is pushed. You say yours won't start at all. In your case, I would lean toward a bad fuel pump. Try giving the gas tank a rap with a 2x4. That may get it going enough to get you home. But yes, a fuel pump doesn't usually die a slow death, it goes instantly. That would explain why it was running fine and then dead.
Can't argue with that, my bad. Little to wrapped up in my own issue to notice the obvious difference and my apologies to the OP for the highjacking. But since he's left the building.....truck is off a very busy road which makes it hard to hear with all the traffic, coupled with I'm listening for something I've never heard before. That said, I didnt hear a humming or whirring noise from the tank and since your saying it either works or doesn't work I'm now inclined to agree the pump is the culprit. That valve stem trick also seems like a good way to confirm that, thank you. I'll be packing the 2x4 when I head over too, good looking out bro! That might be the life/wallet saving suggestion of the century.

OK, truck has 190k on the clock, let's assume pump is the problem. 3 weeks ago I pulled the tranny and installed a new clutch with only a floor jack, no picnic. (It did occurr to me that I may have pinched a wire but I checked all around and I'm pretty positive the clutch operation has no bearing on the current problem. Just a coincidence....... I hope.) Dropping the tank is as much of a challenge? Lots of posts seem to say that. One guy claimed he knew a guy who cut an access hole in the bed, its that bad. 2 straps, 4 bolts, seriously? Please tell me thats a joke.

AS for the difficulty of getting to the fuel pump

Iam not even sure how to get the bed up I put a flatbed on mine after my truck was stolen and i just unbolted my flatbed and raised it up with a tractor. The old bed i used a grinder and sawzall to get it off.

As for dropping the fuel tank as long as your careful with all your lines and electrical I would think this would be the easier route to go (as long as u dont have mroe then a few gallons in your tank then it could get pretty damn heavy.

AS for cutting a hole in the bed you would probley have to cut around 8" hole to get the fuel pump out and be able to get it out without cutting yourself up. I dont think it would mess with the structrual integrity of th ebed much unless your carrying extemley heavy loads, (in your bed ofcourse) and you dont cut right on the side of the bed. A good tip for this would be to drill a pilo hole with a small drill bit and stick a piece of wire threw there or something else to see exactly where you would be cutting your hole before u actuly make the cut.

The line that is directly ontop of the fuelpump on the exterior becareful with that! i broke mine and just used a little superglue to keep it in place after the replacement. If it comes loose your fuel rail wont take in gas and it will sputter your truck to a stop!

I think the hardest thing is to get the fuel pump itself out I had to very generously spray some wd40 there to get it to budge. You can see aroudn the top of the fuel pump where it sits in the tank where u have to spin it off the indentions to get it out once u get it to spin those 2 inches it will just pull right out. I had to use a screwdriver and hammer to finaly get mine to budge.

If you do go the route to change your fuelpump there are some videos on youtube i belive and i think theres one in the DIY here.

The biggest problem I had when I replaced mine, was the fuel line itself. It is not that flexible. About as flexible as a soda straw. Smallest bend=Kink. Also a PITA to get it released from the pump. You need a special tool. It can be done without it but still a ROYAL PITA!!!! You also have the electrical and purge solenoid connections to deal with, and the fuel filler and vent lines. This is not an easy job. If I had to do it again, I would have no hesitation in giving the job to someone else. It makes me cringe at the sheer misery of the job!!!

Again my apologies to the OP but a couple people offered their help with my problem so I feel I should carry this thread through to the end.

Recap, truck was stuck in a commercial parking lot and that was freaking me out the most. I have no doubt I can fix it as long as its in my driveway.

Truck cranked but wouldn't start. Narrowed it down to a bad fuel pump with the help of you guys. No pressure at the Schrader valve on the fuel rail, no sound from the tank. At the suggestion of a member I tried banging on the tank with a 2x4 and rubber mallet to get the electric motor to spin. Didn't work. Idea is sound and worth a try, just wasn't my day I guess.

Have to give my wife some credit here. While I was pondering all kinds of crazy towing schemes to get it home she called our insurance co, ADDED roadside assistance and got a wrecker to pick it up and deliver it to our house for FREE. We're under the 8 mile allowance thank god. Point is, we didn't have roadside before she called. Insurance co said add it to the policy then they'll pay for the tow all in the same phone call. Frankly I would never have thought to them and that's real cool they hooked us up. The roadside is under $30 a year for 3 cars so its a total win in my book. Maybe I'm the only idiot that didn't know they do that but if I'm not the only one and your truck/car is stuck somewhere and you plan on doing the repair yourself call your insurance company before you call a wrecker! Might save you some money. I'm not a shill for them so I won't mention the co even if someone asks. Just call your own co. Probably a good idea to know how they can help before you have a problem. Don't be me and start designing a jury rigged two wheel, come-along, tack welded, make shift Uhaul knock off car tow'er thing to save a couple bucks. Call your insurance co first.

Anyway, truck is in my driveway. We're in for some rough weather tomorrow so I don't think I'll get to do anything but I am planning on cutting a hole in the bed to get to the fuel pump. I can weld so putting the cut out back in is no problem and I have a bed liner so no one will ever see it. Maybe I might weld a flange on the cut out and with some machine screws make the cut out into nicer access plate. We'll see how it goes.

I'll update this thread as the job progresses. I hate it when people ask for help then never post after that to.

Thanks to all that have offered their help so far and if your just reading the thread hopefully you get something out of it that helps you if you have the same issue.

Thanks so much for the update. Most never bother, and that helps no one but them. I have only heard of one person cutting their bed for access. It is kind of extreme, given that this is probably the only time you will have to get at it. So, I would weigh that decision carefully. I like your idea of a flange, I was thinking of just screwing a metal access panel on mine. But, I ended up dropping the tank. Good luck on whatever method you choose, and keep us updated with any questions along the way.

Quick update,

Decided to cut the floor on Sun. Simple operation that took literally 15 mins. The dimensions of the hole are roughly 7 x 9". I started by using a drain plug that was conveniently close and based the location and size off that. The gas tank is slightly more forward under the bed than is ideal but I should have enough room to do what needs to be done. I used gloves, eye protection of course, a tape measure, square and electric grinder with a 4 1/2" metal cutting disc. The new pump is a Delphi, OE for the truck and was $139.00 online with a 5% off coupon code, $130 + $18 2 day shipping. No tax and the total was $149 n changey. I did a ton of research before buying so we'll see how that pans out once its in.
