Default school project 3.7 liter to 5.7 liter hemi conversion RAM 1500

Hello fellow dodge owners! I need your help.

My son has a senior project assignment to complete an engine swap. We have a 2002 RAM 1500 with a 3.7 liter engine and manual 5 speeed tranny.

The project consists of swapping the 3.7 for a 5.7 hemi. We purchased the engine, pcm and harness from a 2004 RAM. We are rebuilding the engine currently. I need to know if the 5.7 will bolt up to the factory motor mount configuration, or will we have to replace/relocate the mounts?

Also, i need to know if the 5.7 will bolt to the manual tranny or is there a conversion plate?

Your help is truly appreciated.

you need to check. pcm. also controls the automatic transmission.

new programming or a replacement pcm.

I know at the time I ordered my 04.. a 5.7 was not available with a manual transmission. that is how I ended up with the 3.7.

and the electronic Fuse Box.. may need to replace that as well. as its programmable as well.

You might be able to get away with a 2500 PCM, you could get a manual trans with a hemi in 3/4 ton. Is that trans going to be able to handle the power? You can get bellhousings/adapter brackets for almost any configuration nowadays. The hemi should bolt in to the cradle with factory 5.7 mounts.

Thanks for the input . Not sure if tranny will handle the power. We will look at the suggested option.

In that case, either the trans from the 2500 or a T-56, either will be a bolt in (T-56 used in the SRT trucks, you will just need a bellhousing to adapt from the hemi bolt pattern to the trans).

Default School project update

Well we broke down the core motor. Block was good, bored it 0.02 over, replaced crank, bearings, pistons, connecting rods, cam bearings, etc,. Complete rolling assembly done. Applying hemi-orange ceramic high temp paint to the block.

Heads are being reworked. A few more items and we will be ready to assemble the 5.7.

Still researching the electrical part of this project. I was told the PCM programming is VIN specific. Is there a way around this? Can I order a PCM programmed for a 5.7 liter 5 speed manual?

Will post pictures soon.

Your input is much appreciated!

Default School Project Update

Well, we are damn near done with the motor rebuild. However, I need help with something. There is a 1-inch diameter orrific on the right rear side of the block just below the head deck that has a single bolt secring location. I believe it is a sensor location because it located over a void space in the blocl adjacent to the bellhousing. Can any one help?

FYI, I resolved the PCM issue. I found a company called B&G out of Virgina, that specilizes in MOPAR. They will reprogram your stock PCM with a performance tune based on your engine/transmission specifications for $375. Great people, very helpful.

Also deterined that Power stearing and AC system units from 3.7L are the same for the 5.7.

Hope one you mopar heads can help me out.

Trans from 3.7 should be nv3500 and will bolt up to 5.7. All smallblock mopars have the same bellhousing patterns. I'm not sure about flywheel from the 3.7 to 5.7. You'd just have to tear into it. How is a hemi balanced?

Default update

Thanks for the input. By balancing, I ment we had the connecting rods weighed to insure they were within tollerance.

I have to retract the compatability statement for the ac compressor between the 5.7 and 3.7. they are not the same.

We removed the 3.7 and trany and there apears to be some minor difference in the bell housing bolt pattern configuration. Main connecting bolt locations appear to be the same (they measure out). your thoughts on this are appreciated.
