Rear Locking up in Reverse on 08 Ram 1500
hi,
I have a 2008 Ram 1500 with 62k miles and the other day i was backing out of my driveway and the rear just locked up on me i though i hit something. Pulled forward no problem then went back again and same thing. Pulled up a second time and backed out fine. Went back and forth on street and was fine. Any idea's? i read some other posts that their are clips in there possibly they came out or are loose maybe something is in bottom of diff. I am going to pull off and inspect wanted to se if anyone out has had this issue and what it was. I have the rare lifetime powertrain warranty but def wanna fix before something goes and i get stuck somewhere.

A clip was probably wedged in the gears. They can cause catastrophic rear end damage. I bet one or more of the clips broke or wiggled themselves out.
@62kmi, I hope you have receipts for a prior fluid change. If your dealer is a stickler, they may try to void you even though, changing the oil has nothing to do with those clips that are known to have problems! Or, just put new fluid in if there's damage.ha If theres good fluid, mechanic likely wont even ask about prior changes.

yea that sounds like that could be the problem. I just had the drivetrain inspected by dealerabout 4 months ago so i should be good. I havent done the fluid yet. I may check it and see how it looks but ill def bring into dealer, how hard is it to put new clips in there? Can you just leave them out? You think I should check out inside of diff before i bring it in to them?
I would pull the cover. Make sure there isnt a clip at the bottom because chances are that if a mechanic finds a clip, they will remove it, replace the cover and send you on your way. Not all the time, but I could happen.
IF you walk in with the clip in your hand, they will have to repair it.
No, you cannot drive around without them. If a mechanic tells you so, he's misinformed and incorrect! it will cause the clutch dics to be sloppy and wear grooves into the carrier. it's taking a chance on the dics not breaking not to mention it allows them to be sloppy in there.
You have to take the carrier completely out. This is rather intensive. They would likely install all new retaining clips before re-assembling. It's a several hour job and not something you can do yourself.

Guy at dealer thinks that is it the parking brakes shoes, said if was the rear it would be doing it all the time. I explained to him and he said that when you remove the rotors its starts the process of whats happening. I just did brakes/rotors about 2 months ago and had to bang the **** out of them to get them off. Ill have to inspect.
you have the lifetime powertrain warranty... let the dealer figure it out is my best advice....
Also, why did you double post?
