i knew it!! You felt the driveline binding because you were turning in 4 hi. Unless you are on a slippery surface, you will feel this when you turn. The reason you couldn't get it out of 4hi, is because it sometimes takes more than a few feet of movement to disengage. Especially if the drivetrain is in a bound up state. I would try engaging and disengaging going in a straight line to make sure everything is alright. Read your owners manual on shifting the transfer case.
