new build on 2003 ram 4.7 timing seems off
hi , i just rebuilt my 4.7 in my 2003 ram , replaced several parts with new and used some old ones .. been having trouble with my new "ebay" lifters sticking and rockers falling off , fixed it twice now ...but the last time it was quiet for a minute before one stuck ...idles good and all but no power took it apaart again and didn't see any rocker arms fallen but one on drivers side was extremly loose so that lifter must have been stuck ... would a stuck lifter still allow the valve to open if the rocker arm was still on it ?
also when #1 is at TDC the #2 cylinder (on passenger side head.) valve is open ..is that correct ? wondering if i got the cams mixed up ....
been at this for 2 months ..very frustrating, seems like timing is off but @ tdc i have both V8 marks at perfect 12 oclock , i suppose with fallen rockers there would be valves not working also , that would cause power lose..

Are the lifters used? Sounds like they are.
I would get new one's. It will likely solve a lot of your headaches.
Sounds like you have the timing correct and are just second guessing yourself.

they are suposedly new but from ebay , 100.00 for all 8 of them ..but they are obviously junk, have had 3 stick so far .. i think i will put all my old ones back in ..never had a rocker/lifter tick before the build..i have a small crank noise on wind down also ..after a shot of gas...i used my old crank and rod bearings ..proly not the best idea ..
ok, i put the old lifters in and it fixed the noise problem ... timing still sems off , we rotated the timig one tooth back and it seems to work better but still not perfect ... does anyone know if maybe the left cam might have to go one tooth farther than the right one ? we moved both cam sprockets from V8 (12oclock.) towards the 1 oclock position..
read about it somewhere ..the left cam "relaxing" or something ...???

And no Both Cam Sprockets Should Be At 12 O clock what you read was talking about how the cam before chain was on kept wanting to go to the relaxed State and said a pair of vise grips could be used to hold the cam from going to the relaxed state while trying to Reinstall chains
yes , idler was at 12 oclock , crank sprocket 6oclock and both v8's at 12 oclock ... funny thing is it runs better one tooth towards 1 oclock ...but back fires at 4 grand and still not full power , the timing kit i put on was from ebay ... i double checked the markings on cam sprockets with old sprockets and all was good..have not checked the crank sprocket to see if dot ligned up with old cranlk sprocket dot .... not sure what else to try at this point ..

i had to file my over sized piston rings ...put them all to minimum spec ...the old rings that came out had over max spec gap .... dont think this would cause a problem would it? unless rings broke but i don't think , have not seen any smoke coming from the motor at all ..
