How Good Are New Ram's Offroad?
How good are the new ram's offroad? what mod's can I make to help offroad? I was thinking a lift kit, and bigger tires..but I heard a lift kit destory's your gas milage [which I dont care about much], but also makes your car a lot less safe in a crash [which I do care about..since I was in a really bad accident last Nov] any help would be apprichiated
I wouldn't imagine a small lift of 3" is going to affect it one way or another. It might make it more prone to roll over, but as far as gas mileage goes, I can't see it affecting it *that* much. You may feel more cross winds.
What kind of wheeling are you gonna be doing and in what kind of terrain? The type of terrain will have the greatest impact on mods suggested, tires being the first mod and working from there.
Any full size truck will have trouble on tight trails and other situations based on its weight.
A Jeep Wrangler is arguably the best 4x4 ever (in production right now).

I dont know, my girlfriend and I go off into a field behind her house, it's all mud and hills and ****. Nothing too heavy, just mud, some hills.. maybe like some small rivers lol, nothing huge. Not like rock-climbing.
For what you are describing, I would just go with what you have. If you really want to spend some money get some more agressive tires. However a more agressive tread design will negatively impact fuel ecomomy and dry pavement stopping distances.
I have a 3" body lift on my ram and you are correct about killing the fuel mileage!!
I lost about 1 mpg when I put on the 35's and lost another 1-1.5 when I put on the body lift.
It looks so good now that I wouldn't go back to stk for the 1-1.5 mpg!

I agree the others that I wouldn't get too nuts on mods...my feeling is that it's not a great off-roader to start with and I don't think it'll ever be a great one with whatever you do. I get the feeling that it's kind of a bull in a china shop, but I also have a Wrangler, which like Doc says is probably the best off road vehicle made, so maybe I'm spoiled that way. You just don't want to get the Ram into some tight places it can't get back out of...it's not very nimble, especially if you have the QC. Sounds like what you plan, you should be fine.
My advice is to take it out a time or two and see what the "weakest link" is and start there...it'll probably be the tires if you do much mud. I wouldn't do skid plates unless you are around a lot of rocks and stumps. If you do a lot of mud, the skid plates can do more harm than good if you pack a bunch of mud in them and don't hose it out. Tends to raise fluid temps. I'd say the same about a lift kit. It's not much practical value unless you need the additional clearance for rocks and stumps and crap. If that's the case, then you'd want taller tires as well. If you're going to do much mud, consider a locking rear diff. It's a big improvement even from the limited slip. Likewise, if you do a lot of mud, you may want to consider a winch for when the inevitable occurs.
Good luck.

Well Im not taking it on trails and stuff, there's just a lot of huge fields and open places with a lot of mud and hills, and it looks like fun lol..
i thought my old 02 ram did pretty good in the mud, i got it stuck once, but thats only cause i took it somewhere that only people with huge lifts and big tires go, and i took my stock ram there
, ehhh what can i say, it was fun.
