Default Ram Recall Investigation

While we have heard constantly about the GM recalls and probably laugh in their ineptitude, honestly we shouldn't celebrate too loud. Fiat Chrysler has been notified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on an investigation of 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 pickups. It isn't good, either. We'll detail the investigation and look into why we may have some worry of our own.

The Dodge 9.25-inch rear end is used across many Fiat Chrysler solid-rear axle vehicles, and the issue is actually well-known by many Ram enthusiasts. The clutch packs' pin retainer falls out and the pins back out and lock up the rear axle. Welcome to several years ago, NHTSA.

There has been a repair on the books for some time; however, the parts have been on a national backorder for about as long. So far, the only complaints have come from 15 vehicle owners.

Read the rest on the Dodge Forum homepage.

Even though I live in the UK (I'm a Brit) I filed my compliant in 04/05 about the clutch pack retainer issue on my 03 Hemi QC from advice on this forum, in an attempt to get numbers up so the NHTSA would investigate.
I received an email back saying that they did not have at that time, a significant number of incidences and no further action was to be taken.
I had to strip out my diff and found the clips had deeply cut into the carrier. All bearings and seals obviously compromised by aluminium filings.
Upshot was, a DTT fitted along with new master install kit new seals bearings etched and a full flush of the entire diff along with the axel tubes cleaned.
Read here = Lots of $$$'s and one p####d off Dodge owner as no transferable warranty to cover the costs.

What cracks me up is how uninformed the NHTSA is. The clutch pack retainer issue started with the AAM axle with limited slip way back in 1994 and continued to be an issue until they went away from AAM in 2011...

So does the recall only apply to 2005 MY or does it span the entirety of the 3rd gen Ram...?

Looks like 2005 is the only year under investigation which is odd because 2005.5 is when the retaining clips were 'beefened' up as a patch to the problem. Still issues afterwards but not as many as 2005 and earlier.

I never had the issue and made sure I wouldn't. I yanked out the stock LSD at 19k miles when I re-geared to 4.56s and stuck in an Auburn LSD...

I was less knowledgeable than I am now about my dodge, when my LSD clutch pack retaining clips let go.
Caused a LOT of damage
I junked my stocker like Hammer did, skilled up and read a whole ot of info on here about our trucks, then put in a DTT.
I just cant believe - but thankful - that there hasn't been a major failure causing injury from this fault. The potential to lock up the rear end from it grenading due to parts failure, is very high IMHO.

I was gonna yank the stocker out, but I have a Lifetime Powertrain Warranty that would cover any of that damage so I said screw it, not gonna drop money into it.

Also, it's an '08 and only has 16kmi so it hardly gets driven. Fluid was changed at 1kmi, 5kmi and cover removed for inspection at 10kmi. Everything looked good. Truck gets more maintenance time than driving time.lol
