Default output shaft seal question

2003 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 SLT. I have a leaking output shaft seal on the backside of the transmission case so I am going to replace the seal this weekend. Seems pretty straightforward, but do I need to drain and refill the transfer case fluid and/or the transmission fluid at the same time? Some guys have indicated that fluid comes out when you remove the yoke from the TC.

Also, where it is leaking there appears to be some metal "dust" like particles in the fluid….hope this is normal. Last guy who owned the truck put in a new TC before I bought it, and I just had the driveshaft reworked and they put on new U Joints.

Thanks!

T-case is isolated from trans but if you wanted to change the fluid in that, it's relatively easy as there is a drain lug AND a fill plug. Takes ~2.5qts of trans fluid.

You can remove the driveshaft no problem. When you remove the seal you may have some leaking. You can just tap the new seal on and top off when warm if you want but the fluid loss should be very minimal. So minimal that you can use the other 1/2qt from the t-case flush to top it off.

Just be sure to wipe the seal and surrounding area clean before removing the old seal.
As far as the dust, it's probably from the outer tailshaft and not anything internally.

Thanks for the help. I got a new seal from O'reilly, but the one on my truck currently has a boot attached to the seal and the new seal does not have a boot. Guy from O'reily says that they don't stock the one with the boot and that it "probably doesn't matter" …..I hate when they say that

Again, this is the tail output seal coming out of the back of the transfer case.

Anybody know? The one he sold me is National part #3946

Thanks!

Nevermind, it was the wrong seal. For the record the correct seal is o'relly Part # 710660 and Mopar part #5019026AA and it is called the Transfer Case Output Shaft Seal "REAR". This is why I always work on this truck myself and always seek advice on this forum. Nobody else who works on or sells you parts cares about your truck as much as you do Hope this helps someone out! Please correct me if you think anything here is wrong so we can all learn more.
