Default Rear Axle Pinion Nut recall

Received notification in the mail that my truck is affected by this recall. I expected it to be about the airbags, so this was a surprise when I opened it. Is this the infamous C-clip finally being acknowledged? Any info on what this is about?

Nope, not the c clip. A small number of '05s have had the pinion nut come loose resulting in the driveshaft popping off. Which could lead to an accident. I believe they install a separate retainer so the nut can't loosen.

The c - clips (technically lsd retaining clips) failure just causes $$$ issues in rebuilding the rear end but ain't killed anybody - so I guess it doesn't rate a recall...

Thanks. I'll give the dealer a call tomorrow and see what they say.

My understanding was they replace it and make sure it has loctite on it. Maybe Im wrong. Either way, mine was "redone"? when I did my gears

Thumbs up Recall resolved

I scheduled to have mine replaced. They also scheduled to repair the airbag issue.
Turned out that mine had failed AND the rear end was about to fail.
They installed a new gear set and seals.
Went without the truck for almost two weeks.
Had to drive a Chrysler 200 as my "work truck".
All in all I felt that I was pretty well taken care of and the truck rides much quieter now.
No money out of pocket and I even saved money driving a car. I rode around with the windows down and AC cranking.

Good to hear. I wouldn't be upset if they had to redo the rear end on it. I finally got a hold of one of the dealers here and I'm "on the list" for both recalls. No ETA on parts from Dodge, though.

I got the pinion nut recall and took it in last week to the dealer. They stated all they do is check to make sure it is torqued properly. Everything checked out ok so they didn't do any additional work. I had a small leak in the differential so over the weekend, I took it to another shop to have the cover taken off and seal replaced. I just got a call from them and said that there are metal shavings in the differential oil and I'll need a rebuild soon.

I'm not a tech so this is not an area I'm familiar with. Question I have is could the pinion nut recall have something to do with the problems I now have with my differential? My '05 Ram truck has 99k miles so it seems premature to have to deal with a rebuild. Thanks.

Your metal in the oil is likely from the clutch pack retaining clips that have broken off and been chewed up by the gears

The dealer should have opened it up to check the torque on the nut, so they would've seen that I would think. It's getting close to the holidays...do you trust this other shop?

Yes, I trust the other shop. I called the dealer and he stated they don't open it up to check the torque since the nut can be access from the outside. I'm just thinking that the recalled pinion nut has something to do with the differential going bad. Seems like 99k miles is premature for this kind of problem. I'm planning to go back to the dealer to see if they are willing to help me out with a rebuild.
