Default P0016 code please help

Hello everyone,

I have a 2003 dodge ram 1500 4x4 4.7l. I recently threw a few codes such as p0344 & p0016. After connecting the scanner i found that it was time to replace the crank sensor and the cam sensor. So after replacing both the check engine light was cleared and that lasted approx 1.5 days.

When the truck is not throwing codes it runs great. It doesn't seem to have any problems! It runs just as smooth as before.

Now i am throwing only a p0016 code and the truck gets thrown into "limp" mode. Has anone else experienced this? Please help! Thanks

One post from three years ago...... I wouldn't expect an answer.....

That said, what are you driving, and how many miles are on it? Had any work done to it recently related to the timing chain(s)?

Thanks for responding. It’s a 05 1500 with 4.7. I just picked it up used with 103000 on it. I don’t know the history on it. I’ve replaced both the cam and crank sensors and cleared the codes, but it came back on after about 3 minutes.

Think I would have a look at the timing chains, and see how much slop you have.

HeyYou you think with all the problems I'm having and given I have 103,000 on her a short block might be the way to go? How much would a short block cost? I would do the work.

Disconnect the battery for 15 minutes or so, that *should* clear codes.

You don't really have that many miles on it, unless it was REALLY mistreated by a previous owner, the engine shouldn't require a rebuild yet......

Thanks for the info HeyYou, I will attempt to clear the code this way and if it doesn't work I will assume I have a timing chain problem and go ahead and change it.

Well, I was able to clear the codes and not change the timing chain. I went to my local Dodge dealer and sought out a mechanic and asked if I could ask him a few questions. I explained to him I changed both crank and cam sensors with aftermarket sensors he said I should use Mopar sensors so I did. Still threw the code and he told me to bring him the truck. He put some laptop on it and cleared all codes and reprogramed the ECU. This guy spent about 45 minutes with me and it seems to have fixed the problem. I've put 200 miles on her and all is well so far.
I thanked him and bought him a big bottle of the Captain which is all he wanted.
