I am getting ready to replace the foam in my left seat, like so many... I came across this "upgrade" foam cushion (MDI-methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) that boast a ten year warranty and was wondering if anyone has tried it...:

The latter ad raises another question, how do I know if I have the Occupant Classification System in my 2007 Ram? I have noticed that most cushions are either for seats with or without the OCS... I would add that my build sheet states that I have Advanced Multistage Air Bags....would that indicate that I do have OCS?

According to the part guy the MDI cushion is not available for Rams that have OCS....which is strange to me. However, I am still not sure if the 2007 Ram Quad cloth 40/20/40 seat has the OCS sensors....my local Dealer was not very cooperative....so is there a way to know for sure if the OCS is on the truck? Since my truck has Advanced Multistage Air Bags I assume that it has OCS or some similar sensor, but I wish I knew for sure before I remove the seat... I do not want my ride to be down for weeks if I have to re-order a cushion. Any ideas?

 

I did mine some years ago. Per a tutorial floating around somewhere, I ground down the sharp edges of the metal frame and wrapped them with burlap to add a layer of protection. I glued back together what foam I could and added a 12x12 piece with some trimmings on each side and put the cover back on. That was years ago and not a problem since.

Thanks GRed, I had seen that Thread and I think I will probably try a repair on mine and see how it holds up....especially since that "upgraded" seat cushion (that I linked to) apparently will not work for my Ram and the OEM cushions are no better than the one I have....although if I correct the poor welds and other factory problems a new OEM cushion might hold up better than it did.

We plan a 12000 mile trip with the truck and a tag-along camper next summer so I need a comfortable seat, especially since I am a very big guy.... A more firm and supportive cushion would help. I have some high quality foam left over from a project where I placed new foam in the dinette seats of our camper, so I may try and use some of that to add support both in the middle of my seat and on those edges...I just have to be careful not to add so much that I cannot get the seat cover back on.

I was also wondering if anyone has tried to replace the Ram stock seats with seats from a Ford or Chevy? The cost is probably prohibitive and that may cause a lot of hassle since I do have power seats and multistage air bags.... I long for the old days....I can change out and swap seats in my '66 F250 with almost any old truck and some cars from that era....with merely some minor alterations...

If I find that those repairs work out I will post the results....it may be a while before I will know if they hold up.

 

Slowdog, Your absolutely correct about adding too much and getting that cover back on. I just got my 08 and it doesn't have the tear yet but its showing signs, meanwhile since I just got it.. I have a lot other maintenance to get done. trans fluid chgn, rear diff fluid chgn, spark plugs, right now its purring really good 70k,.. and gas mileage is great. just not sure what previous maintenance has been preformed. Then maybe that seat because I know its going to tear soon.

Ive always used marine grade foam, first time I re-did my boat seats & benches I was sold. Even did the living room couch seat foam

Look up this part # 5178109AA on the 1A Auto site. It was a direct replacement for the OEM foam I took out. Simple to replace plus I think it has a Lifetime Warranty.

 

Thanks for the reply! 1aauto had finally replied to my query and told me that that new cushion probably would not work for my Ram...I am thankful for your verification. I wish that it would work as it appears to be superior foam.

 

I just installed that upgrade foam from A-1 in my 06 Mega Cab with a replacement leather cover from Richmond upholstery. I absolutely love it! Although with my seat adjusted as high as it goes, which is where I have always preferred it, my head just about hits the headliner! Makes me feel like I'm driving a new truck!
